I haven't heard the XM6, so I can't be any help there. However, in using the D-Zero with the S3, I've never had any issues with hiss-- maybe the 4R is more sensitive than my IEMs? (I tend to use the Sennheiser IE8i and Fischer DBA-02 Mk.II most often). I can also confirm an utter absence of hiss with the UHA-6S Mk.II, which I find to be a pretty stellar performer thus far (haven't had it long). And as far as cables go, I have found them to make only a minute difference thus far on my desktop rig, and never felt the costs would be justified in a portable setup personally. Obviously, others have a different opinion, so take that with a heaping hunk of sodium chloride.

Thanks! This definitely helps. The Leckerton seems to be a pretty popular choice and basically has nothing but good reviews. Which op-amp do you have in yours and would that be the one you recommend for the S3 driving Westone 4Rs?

I decided to buy the full USB Audio Recorder Pro, since the trial version worked so well.
Not only does it crash every time I start it, but now it just completely froze my S4 and I can't even restart the phone.
What the hell?

Yeah, I had specifically ordered it because I thought it would work without U-ARP, but it looks like I'll now be waiting on the U-ARP background app. Anyway, at least it works and I don't need to use the 1/8" aux cable

So far, like the quad-core Exynos powered Galaxy S3, the quad-core Exynos powered Samsung Galaxy Note II can work with the FiiO E7, the iBasso D12, Leckerton UHA-6S MKII, the ODAC, … ; had some issue with the HeadAmp Pico (bug fixed by HeadAmp); and doesn’t work with the FiiO E17 using the stock USB audio driver.
 
So, in regard to the USB protocol, the behaviour of the Galaxy Note II is likely identical to the behaviour of the Galaxy S3.
