Shootout: 114 Portable Headphones Reviewed (Xiaomi Mi Headphones added 04/21/2015)

Coming from a K240 owner, they are not portable at all. They're hard to drive with portable players, you need to run them at full volume to get any kind of performance from them and the sound you get is pretty unimpressive. There's also the problem of them being semi-open meaning there's no isolation to speak of, and the fact that they have no folding mechanism makes them quite hard to carry around anywhere.

Hi All,

I'm a person who has been subsisting on $10 earphones for a while, and am finally looking for a considerable upgrade to full headphone.  As I am new to these kind of matters, I would greatly appreciate any help or advice.  Below are my criteria for getting one:

budget: ~$70-80, no more than $85
Weight: no more than 1 pound/16 oz
Supra-aural/Circum-aural: definitely circumaural
Closed/Open: fine with both
Listening environment: mostly at home, sometimes moderately busy offices
Audio source: My HP dv7t laptop, with IDT HD audio codec.  Music usually at 200-320 kbps.
Audio equipment: Just my laptop. No amps
Music genres: fairly broad, but tilts heavily towards electronica and indie rock/pop.  some hip-hop, rap, and rnb in between.  a touch of jazz and new age

Any particular choices I should be aware of?

Much thanks!

Not really a portable but you might find the AKG k240 studio in the FS forums here for less than 80, i have seen them. and i like mines as much that i even dare to recommend it.
I have also seem some ATH M50 for lower then 90$ in the FS forums, but you might have to be patient for this one.

Can a cheap amp like fiio E1 or E5 give the extra power to drive headphones who need more power than what an mp3player can provide? Lets say the AT M50 for example.

^ Sure, but the mp3 player must be very weak if it cannot drive ATH-M50's.

The E1/E3/E5 are more of a toy/gadget than a real amp so I wouldn't count on it. Even my E7 is pretty much useful only as a DAC as my J3 and Cube C30 drive most things better than the internal E7 amp.

While I personally prefer the PX100-ii over the 200, I would say the 200-ii is better in terms of detail. It's closed, so the isolation is a huge boost to hearing your music in the first place, and it doesn't have the mid-bass hump which can overshadow the upper end.

I haven't heard the PX100-II but the PX200-II has very decent detail for a portable and excellent clarity. It's a good bit better than the P372 - more on-level with the DT235 or K430.

I'm currently looking for some new portable headphones myself. The things I'm looking for is as follows.

Price: <$100
Closed/Open: Trying to get good isolation so closed.
Circum-aural/Supra-aural: Either.
Use: With my laptop in my dorm room, and occasionally plugging into tv. For use outside, Sansa Fuze, and Sony Walkman S639, though use outside may be limited.
Listening to: Rock of all varieties from punk to heavier stuff, to some poppier stuff.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

If you're looking for good isolation in something that can on occasion be considered portable, the Ultrasone HFI-450/Yamaha RH10MS may be your best bet. Also saw a used PRO 650 on the sale forum for $100 today. It's my favourite Ultrasone in terms of sound but larger, uglier (IMO), and less portable than the 450.
