I should probably clarify that statement a bit. I think the thing is that the Maxell's just hit my "sweet spot." If they had a bit larger soundstage and were ever so slightly more refined I could live with them indefinitely.

I'll also say that I just didn't care for the Denon's and I wouldn't have whether comparing them to the DHP's or not. I am very particular about bass but I am not a bass head. That is - I do not need extreme, raucous bass all the time but I do enjoy bass, good bass, when it's in the recording. I like it to be reasonably powerful, taut and with the ability to go down somewhat deep when called to do so and it must NEVER muck with the midrange. The Maxell's do this for me.

The Denon's bass was a bit too plodding for my tastes and there was a staticky almost distorted noise to the sound that I just couldn't deal with.

Again, out of all the phones I listened to that day the only ones that exceeded the Maxell's to my ears were the Grado SR225's and SR325's.

Then again this was my first time hearing Grado phones (yeah, yeah, I know but until now no store in my area demoed phones) and I've read maybe a thousand posts explaining how piercingly sibilant the highs are on Grado's and after hearing them for myself all I can say is that I really don't know what in the world these folks are talking about.

So maybe I just have strange hearing or taste or whatever, but again, that's what I heard.
