Where would you guys think the MrSpeakers Alpha Dog would go (in sound quality) on the list?
 
I was thinking about getting the Alpha Dog or shelling out some more for the JH13. Does the Alpha Dog sound better? I would like portability but if the Alpha Dog sounds better then I might as well not buy the JH13 and save some.

The Alpha Dogs aren't really portable in the sense of going for a run or a walk or gym with them. They're too darn big! And fairly heavy. And microphonic with the stock cable supplied. For portable use the JH13 every time. For home use and indoor use generally it's down to the sound quality -  that is best determined by you with an extended trial of both side by side

That's true, but it's quite a mod. New 3D printed cups create quite a different acoustic chamber those drivers sit in and the drivers themselves have been extensively tweaked. They have come a long way from their $100 beginnings. I don't regret having them , for closed phones they are really something

To be honest, the requested prices here in Europe are way to expensive for me. I`ll give them a try when I find a bargain. Same I did with the AKG 701.

Hmm, well would ya need an amp to drive the Alpha Dog out of a computer source or even a tablet?

Definitely. They aren't very sensitive

Ah, well the Shure 1540s look good too. They're easy to drive too so I can use 'em with my PC
 
If the Alphas sound better though then I might just have to buy them with an amp
 
I think the Shures might be less clearer than the Dogs for classical though.

1540s is a great headphone. I heard it the other day and thought it sounded fine with classical.

I've seen people downgrade to HD600's.

HiFiMan HE-560.  If even poorer than that, maybe the DT 880 or even K712.
