Battle Of The Flagships (58 Headphones Compared)

@DavidMahler : I have finally buy a new HD800. For the moment I don't have headphone amp just a USB external sound card. The first thing I notice it's the coherency of the sound, it's not bass - medium - treble separatly, it's the full spectrum together. It puts some air between the instrument or the voice and the instrument, I like this.

I have owning a HE500, it have more lush and tactile sound, but the bass was a bit bloated and don't have that coherence between the frequencies.

I wait for a great amp to judge the HD800.

!! You'll certainly benefit sound wise from a headphone amp over a usb sound card. You're facing another fine journey getting those headphones to perform the way they should. He500 owner too.... a lot of money spent on phones compared to the source, which is arguably just as important. And just as much fun finding a good one.

Then why would Sennheiser change the drivers at all if there was no difference in sound? They are made with different materials. Beaten vs new only affects soundstage in my experience. The same pads can't alter brightness no matter how squashed or new.

Cost consideration, acoustic silk was more expensive to produce (and it wasn't drivers). That was an official response from Sennheiser support, btw. There is much more than just soundstage that gets affected by pads age.

David Mahler!

Thank you for this great review, it realy helped me to choose the Audeze LCD-2's  very neutral and detailed, large space between instruments, the midrange and that dark background made it my favorite..and of course the BASS!

Great choice:)  And thank you!

If you love the HD800 without a proper amp, I'm very excited for you because it will get better and better! Congratulations!

Love this thread, and I've been referring to the posts a lot in comparing different cans when considering upgrades/new cans. Any chance of AD2000/AD2000x being added to the list? :)

Thanks a lot for writing this up! Read it in full.
