just ordered he500. gonna be my last headphone purchase.
...hm, I wonder how the V-Moda M-100 would do on this list.
I don't think people realize that the HD800s don't sound harsh, or cold from good setups. Sources matter so much. A lot of digital is glarey and rough until you get to a certain point. Look at David's setup. I think he is past that point...
Excellent review, possibly the best yet.
I was sort of hoping to see German Maestro among the brands , but I guess they're too obscure.
Thanks, man.
Might as well add a Rudistor Chroma to the list as well.
I have and it wasn't too bad. 60's Herleen factory Amperex Bugle Boys are a must in that chain though. Forget Stuttgarts. The HD800 will reveal them as slightly veiled and less dynamic next to the BB's.
...while the M-100 is a good headphone, I think it might be last in terms of sound quality....
Interesting.
I'm definitely going to look back into the HD-800's later down the road. Like I said, for me they were the best sounding/ designed headhones I ever tried. At the time, I didn't have the proper equipment to juice them, and I found them to be harsh. I've always regretted giving up on them.
There's also now an Audio Technica AD2000X, which, at a brief listening test in Tokyo sounded less grainy and more refined than the AD2000s, which were one of the most intense headphones I've ever owned.
I also think you're a bit nuts in some of your impressions, as they're pretty much the exact opposite of my own.
