have heard other recommend the fostex too but they are hard to find where i live + not a fan of the looks/pricey. Any other alternatives?

sz1000 and the biggest fattest pads you can find.... the farther you can put your ears from the drivers, the more laid back and airy the sound will become. some hm5 angled gigantic pads are good for that....

So, what is the difference between the JVC SZ1000's and the SZ2000's? From what I can tell, they both have a 55mm woofer and 30mm tweeters? I also notice a difference in headband style. Also seemed like the SZ1000's creak less?

I dove in and order the SZ1000's, the 2000's cost about $50 more and I haven't been able to find any specific differences.

I also ordered Sen 558's. So I have a nice comfortable open back headphone as well as a big rough basshead setup.

$86 after tax for the 558's, $138 after tax for the SZ1000's. Both new. I could have gotten the SZ1000's for $106 but they would have taken until Mid April to arrive. Both arriving Thursday.

The ear pads are also different between the 2000 and 1000.  The 2000 uses a brass ring around the woofer, improving the lowend over the 1000.

To my ears the 2000 sounds louder with the same input over the 1000.  This could be due to the brass ring reducing the dB robbing vibrations around the woofer chamber.  The 2000 is worth getting if you have the power to push them properly.

Oh I see that in the documentation. The 2000 uses the brass ring, the 1000 uses some sort of tape. Do you feel the sound difference warrants $50+?

Well, it's the pads too.  The protein pads worked better on my Hifiman.  I swapped the to the brainwavz pads  for more ear clearance and impact.  So you will have to spend more as you will have to invest in better ear pads for the 2000.  I rolled with the 1000 for a while, until I found a better price for the 2000, which was $150 shipped.  In my home audio setups, the 2000 was worth getting.  For my portable setups, not so much.

I've got HM5 Pleather pads. Do you think they'll fit on the SZ1000? They were on the T20RP's so they may be a little stretched out.

Would you say the bass is significantly better on the S2K vs the S1K, or is it just overall a better performer? It honestly seems like the only difference driver(s) wise is that brass ring and ofc the pads/headband. I'm just wondering if I should dump another $50 in for the S2K's, or give the S1K's a whirl with HM5's.

TBH, these headphones are going to be used exclusively for bass heavy music and soundcloud rap. I guess I am going to rely on the 558's for a more hi-fi experience and the S1K's for fun.

I guess what I am really wondering is...are the S1K's still going to be bass cannons like the S2K.

The 2k is much better with subbass vs the 1k.  The 2k can move paper at 15hz.

Don't underestimate the capability of the JVC's with other genres of music.  These cans EQ very well, just like quality speakers do.  Add some sound processing and you will be surprised in this "underrated" headphone.

Slap your hm5 pleather on the sz's and youll be all good.

The reason i rec'd sz1k, it is still very bassy, but needs less eq to sound "right" and the SZ1k has a faster/tighter sound than the SZ2k. that said i didn't see you weren't going to use the SZ's for metal as well, and a lot complain the sz2k is too slow for metal, but if it's just for bass heavy and rap AND YOU HAVE AN AMP then get the 2k and you'll be happy you did. If youre not amping and EQing and blah blah blah the SZ1k are still crazy bass cannons but a lot more out of the box and ready to go than the 2k's are.

Remember those carbon nanotubes need a crap ton of time to fully break in, its not a burn in type thing because it's more like large size speakers where they actually measurably loosen up with time in a way traditional headphone drivers don't. The reason i bring this up is pre-break in (not burn in!) they were kinda veiled and narrow sound stage, post break in i can listen to my 2000's happily without EQ anytime.

Read through the first 75 pages of this thread and it inspired me to buy a pair of JVC SZ1000 and SZ2000 to compare, wanted to thank the original guys like HBB and cb (looks like he might be banned) for the information they've put into this thread and how passionate they are about bass. Their work in this thread help make decisions for people like me much easier when it comes to which headphones to buy. My SZ1000 should arrive tomorrow sometime and my SZ2000 should be here about a week later. Coming from headphones like the D2000 and Pro 900 (I felt both had good bass) I can't wait to hear what the SZ's are capable of with EDM, it sounds like there will be no comparison.

I'm excited to give the SZ1000's a twirl. Anybody have any pre-set EQ's and programs I can use that'll work well with the S1K?

The biggest surprise from SZ2000 for me was that its sound quality is actually quite good - it's not just a bass monster like the ASG2.5 which has very good bass but which I can't vouch for its overall sound quality. I come from Layla, SE846, SR009 and HE1000 so that goes a long way.

How is that Stax bass?  I love my sorbed he 400's and vintage orthos for their crisp slam.  I hear the Koss electrostats have more low end than most Stax.
