From here a well known site

Sony headphone park still void of info on the possible future #1 cans on our list.

**waits**

Z7 has still got a big job ahead of it with likes of SZ2 &1K, TH600 & 900 IMO.

The XB1000 was a bass dedicated HP with 70mm but is still behind the above - I expect the Z7 to be more refined and smaller pads than the XB1000 will change dynamics considerably, but I think it's still got a big job ahead of it.

I hope I'm proved otherwise, but if this can had a 70mm driver handling bass only with a 50mm driver for mids and highs (maybe this will come with the JVC SZ3000 ) - I think we'd all be breaking open the champagne now.

Still though, 'citing innit? :D

They are semi-open. This thread May help you http://www.head-fi.org/t/678052/open-back-headphones-with-bass
@s5300

Like WildeWinds said, you're not going to get the most explosive in an open back. I've seen some semi-open with some pretty good bass though

Yeah, that's the one semi-useful thread I've found on the subject. I had the HE-400's and the bass was okay, but they were too heavy & uncomfortable for me. Switched to the Fidelio X1's and also pretty good... but I want MORE. But they need to be open because I have to be able to hear my surroundings (somewhat). There just doesn't seem to be a lot of options if they're open.

Yeah, most open headphones are audiophile. With the Kraken, even though they are semi-open, I can't hear a thing going on around me. That's the thing, most basshead cans are noise isolating. You don't usually want to hear background noise in your music

Have you tried the FOSTEX TH600 and flagship TH900 - these are indeed closed back form headphones, but are remarkable in having amazing soundstage - even bigger than some open-back cans and both these headphones have more bass than you could EQ and be able to handle - check this TH600 bass/paper test and imagine the paper is side of your head/ear

Edit: sorry - just noticed you need open back so you can hear your surroundings, in which case I'd recommend you audition the AUDEZE LCD-X - I've got this can and it does respond very well to bass EQ.

The LCD-2 is apparently well known for its bass extension also, but I've not heard it so can't give you my opinion on it, but like I said, the LCD-X is a good open backed audiophile headphone that can deliver good solid bass with EQ applied, but as you'd expect with an open backed form, you won't get the kind of head vibrating bass a closed back headphone delivers for obvious reasons :)

You know - I had no idea the Kraken cans were semi open - that kinda makes them an even bigger anomaly - I think Razer use voodoo magic on the drivers or something because 40mm drivers just don't kick anywhere else as hard as the Krakens - and they're also semi open - the inference is that if they were fully closed they would kick even harder already?

That's impressive :)

it could just be semi open cuz of bass ports. I wouldn't be surprised if it had absolutely massive ports. Semi open implies some of the SPL will be leaking out, if not most (K240 is considered semi open, but its more open than not. The holes in a circle around the driver on the back of them is the open part of the semi open... But they provide about as much isolation as an open back and leak tons of sound. http://www.acquris.se/images/akg_k240.jpg ) either that or the vents are very tiny with filters or something.

Sorry guys, the Kraken are actually closed. I had looked it up real quick, and had found the answer on yahoo answers. They were saying that you can buy replacement foam pads that make them open. http://www.razerzone.com/store/razer-ear-cushion But like I said, yahoo answers isn't the most reliable source

What do the Z7's cost in USD in Japan?

*Wonder if I can grow another couple of heads to justify buying moar cans

Listening to the HD631's as I write this - sooo good - these things rock - not your chronic SZ level of bass of course, but still fugging lots of it for your monies :)

I've a feeling that there be yet untapped reserves of potential basshead cans from similar type of Asian brands like Takstar - the give away is they all seem to have 50+ drivers (don't think outside of the Kraken any other 40mms would get anywhere near the KP, but love to be surprised so never say never).

And of course - potential reserves of basshead cans may be lying dormant in the gaming world where Kraken has it's roots.

I wonder how many surprise performers there are out there yet to come to light?

While looking for Japan release/price info I found some very skeptical folks. Does 2chan do anything else
biggrin.gif
. They are balking at the Sony release pattern of the MDR series and the combined cost of this 3 piece setup v.s. a HD800,T1 etc. (those were the 2 I was seeing being used in the discussion). Sony's image in Japan and abroad is like an inverted Beats western audiophile v.s. Beats in Japan view.

I've never seen a Sony Hi res display that got any love or was even working.
I took this pic in May.

The J audiophiles are looking at a cluster of these releases and not sure which one to hold onto and they point out the response claim that goes waaaaay waaaay waaaay beyond the human audio perception threshold and wonder what is up with that?  It's getting a good thrashing (the Z7) Cuz they are angry at no/ lack of domestic (Japan) release info or really annoyed with Sony or a
little of both

 .
Sony gets a stand off to the side and others get a listening station (below)
These are all my pics btw.
very_evil_smiley.gif

The Sony are not on the "audiophile" racks.

arrow for my sz which also took a royal pounding in J audiophile circles so...they can be wrong IMO but they are a loud crowd.

I want 70mm of epic head pounding. Lucky we got ati with a pair coming in so I just wanna hear his impressions and see a test for the hell of it since I have no idea when it will get its Japan release. The rumor of another audiophile tilted set beyond the z7 seems to be a lot of hot air as well. This is basshead thread so I'd want the Z7 anyway.

Lets cross our fingers and hope this is a basshead bulls eye

The Philips X1 are open,  I love mine,  the X2 is coming soon.  There is a review of them from a pair that escaped the testing phase in Turkey.  They look awsome with removable pads.  This hobby is getting exciting with all of these treasures being released.
