Battle Of The Flagships (58 Headphones Compared)
May 18, 2013 at 12:12 AM Post #3,736 of 5,854
Keep in mind that you are referring to limited release flagships that cost $1800 (SR Omega), $4000 (R10) and $16000 (Orpheus) 1990s' dollars. Given inflation, those would all cost nearly double that in 2013.

If you think of it that way, I suppose that the $5000 SR-009 and $5000 BHSE represent progress.

Excellent points, Steve!

I will always be a fan of the M50. It was my first real closed audiophile headphone, and still among my faves. For their price point, you can't ask for much more out of a closed headphone. It's easy to drive, seals quite well, is very comfy after some stretching and is well balanced with just enough added fun for fledging audiophiles.

I think it gets a lot of hate because of it's popularity. People love to hate on what's popular.

But the actual physical review of the Rev. 2 I've had done for a few days now.  I will get the Rev.2 review put in there asap.

Oh, man! As an owner of the LCD-2 Rev. 2, I'm thrilled to read this. Really looking forward to reading your thoughts. Thanks again for this magnificent thread and all if the time and energy that you have expended to create and maintain it. It is my new favorite! :)

However, in the sense that Audio Technica has seemingly innumerable choices that they offer at a higher price point, the M50 is sorta like a Toyota Camry in a list where Audio Technica has many Lamborghini models to offer.

I still have an AT that my father actually used in his youth, the build quality is just amazing for the money indeed.

+1. It's prohibitive for David to review just about every headphone there is and that's just fine.

But what if high-end cans were truly available to the masses at a cheap price?

Then that truly would be what I call progress.

I think your concerns are misplaced.

Have had the Mad Dogs before and am auditioning the Paradox headphones by LFF right now. I am also recieving a demo pair of LCD-3's from Burson Audio. Would you still recommend getting the HE-400's? I love both the Mad Dogs and the Paradox. So maybe the HE-400?

Having not heard either the Mad Dogs or the Paradox, I can't be sure how the HE-400 compares, but I do think it compliments the HD650 and DT880 very nicely!

If you're getting an LCD3 why bother with an HE400

Paradox has more air and is more open sounding that the HE-500s?  Well, not IMO.  But we all hear differently.  Also "I" have not heard any HifiMan headphone that has muddy highs.  My ears must be getting old..
