Yea I've heard that it is very hard to tune planar in buds, though I would like to see more models since it will get better with more adopters. I do hope it's decent enough, from his descriptions he has worked for months to tune this and will have a neutral-bright leaning sound sid. I might be ordering/pre-ordering this next month.
Please do let us know your thoughts on these if/when you do order and recieve them? I would love to have a (good) set of planar earbuds. That would just be a dream come true. I am a bit of a planar freak; at least for headphones and IEMs (thus far).
Getting the DC Elite would be more of a test balloon for myself. Honestly I don't expect a night and day difference at all. Just want to know what the fuzz is about. There are people that rave about source synergy, "sound" of certain amplifiers, staging capabilities technical chops that sources are able to bring out of a transducer. Truth be told the filter selection (some of the filters) on the Q5k do change the staging a tiny bit, and the super slow rolloff filter noticanly changes and tames the upper treble. On some days I think I hear bigger changes, on others the changes are barely to unnoticable to me. So I cannot be sure if this is placebo or not. Either way, if I 'd go for the DC Elite I will nkow if source upgrading is a thing for me or not, seeing they are considered high end.
Oh! I totally get it, and you might find that it does indeed sound THAT much better. I just wanted to temper your expectations on something like this. On the other hand, the DCE DOES have a desktop class DAC inside it (Rohm chip), and is known to sound VERY good. This is one of the differences I had mentioned about the DCE and the DC07 Pro. The DC07 Pro has Cirrus chips (4 of them) just like the DX300, and the DCE has the Rohm chip (though only one) just like the DX320. This of course, does mean that it uses more power from the host than some other dongles might (again, DC07 Pro, which sips power comparatively @80mW). Also the DCE only has 2 filters, if that is important to you. For me, I am just like you. Some days I hear a pretty decently sized difference in filters, and others I can't tell a difference at all.
I DO indeed think that if you A/Bed your 5K and the DCE, you would notice quite a difference in the quality of sound. I think that you have the "critical listening" skills and a discerning ear as well, that you would notice.
About power for mobile dongles: Seeing these things are powered via usb or a LI battery these things are always limited to 4 V rms balanced, which is the Voltage the Batteries supply. A step up transformer might be the way to supply more voltage, but they don't do that in dongles, guessing the technical complexity and size rises too much.
Well the Qudelix already hits that ceiling, so there I don't expect any improvements. That beeing said the Qudelix has enough power on tap for all my transducers!
The DCE actually can make 4.6VRMS from using the stock cable. But keep in mind that the voltage limit of (roughly) 4VRMS doesn't really tell the whole story of driving power, because a good implementation of opamps can work wonders. For instance, while the DCE can make 4.6VRMS it is only capable of 280mW @32Ω, while the DC07 Pro only makes 4VRMS, but is capable of 430mW @32Ω.
I have read that there is a (iBasso made) splitter cable that would allow you to use external power with this, and while I don't think it increases the output power, people say that it sounds much better in this configuration. Where the tech might make a difference in driving power isn't in the VRMS, it is in the current available. The DCE can make up to 500mA (which is huge for a device of this size and design). This is very important for very low impedance sets, but is also even more important with planar head gear, since it uses a static VRMS, and the current is what swings with volume and power requirements.
I already decided for myself that I am never going to invest into expensive cables to try and improve sound quality. It seems insane to me to spend more than 30€ on a piece of sheathed wire with some plugs attached.
Oh, I don't really blame you here, except where the quality of the materials used make a difference. The problem with buying Chinese products such as this is that they could lie and tell you anything about how good the quality of the copper and silver, whether it is in "litz" configuration, etc... but I would argue (from my experience) that not all of these "so called" cables are actually using the TOTL materials they claim that they are. This DOES give me pause sometimes when looking at cheap cables. Though, for me I would never buy a boutique cable that was super costly just because of the name brand, or whatever.
Same Same.

Mostly my girlfriend lets it pass and sees it as my hobby and my money. I know this awkward moment when she asks for the pricing. The real reason for me not wanting to tell prices of gear is that I will have to spell out to her how insane I am. I realize that saying "This tiny piece of equipment to play back music did cost 450€, honey!" Sounds really weird. It is a moment when you have to admit your own addiction. Probably similar to being at an AA meeting and spelling out loud "Hello, I am Tom and I am an alcoholic."
That is pretty much it for me as well. Getting into the ins and outs of WHY I have so many different pieces of head gear is where I lose her every time, and she thinks I am nuts... haha She doesn't understand why I one set isn't sufficient, let alone the amount that I have overall.

She says that it hurts her brain when I try and explain it to her.
Ugh yeah, i totally relate and do this lol. My partner ignores new gear these days...even though she knows what most of these little packages from AliX hold inside
It appears to be pretty common on here with all of us. This is just all part of the addiction we all suffer from, apparently.
