Rank the Headphones that You Own.

after a while
the meze 109 is hands down the better headphone for me
with eq it sounds perfect to my ears
660s 2 is the second best one but would love to share the first place with the 109 but comfort on the s2 is just a huge let down for me
Have you tried the 660s2 with an OTL tube amp like the Folkvangr?

The WA22 is equally as good; tubes just make them really come to life.

It's still very much a part of the family. It's just that some of the under the hood changes result in a different experience from the others in the 6-series. Technically, it's a bit of an upgrade (no 3 blob imaging), staging is more natural and precise. But the big changes are upper mids are not as forward instead sitting back with everything else, and bass SPL is improved significantly. It only partially shows up on FR graphs but the experience of listening to the S2 is the bass is way more satisfying.
Yep, the changes you just noted are exactly what makes me want to try it. Also the main reasons I didn't care for the others much. As for timbre and tonality, my favorite was actually the 58X. A little darker, a bit more bass. My problem with that one was that it somewhat sounds a tad veiled and grainy.

Absolutely agree with you. My 660S2 underwent a significant improvement when I paired them with my Woo OTL.

Having owned the H58X before, let me tell you, the 660S2 is a big step up. It sorts out all the stuff that used to bug me about the 58X, including what you've mentioned.

1: HiFiman Sundara Closed back; HiFiman HE400i open back. with Deconi ear pads; Koss sp 330 closed back.; Yamaha HP2 Orthodynamic.; Koss Porta pro with Deconi ear pads. I have 3 pair of Porta pro's. A notable difference is that I use different headphones when listening to different types of music.

I own quite a few. But the Susvara is the best one I had. The worst one was the Meze Elite.
Chord TT2 can play with Susvara with his own onboard headphone amplifier? I mean from front panel jack's?

My first tube amp just arrived. I figured it'd be a good time to document this before I become under the influence of tubes. Everything's currently running balanced off a K7.

  1. Arya Stealth (Dekoni Velour, EQd)
  2. LCD-2C (OG Vegan, EQd)
  3. ZMF VC (Ironwood, Universe Suede)
  4. ZMF Atticus (Marblewood, Ori Suede)
  5. 6XX (copper mass load, stock pads)

If not using EQ, the VCs are my favorite headphones by far. The stock timbre is so nice. The Aryas are my oldest pair, so I've been able to fine tune my EQ over time. I've had other headphones that I would rank higher than others here for sound, but didn't fit my head well (800S, 109 Pro, LCD-XC, Aeon Noire). Based on my memory from months ago, I'd put the 109 Pros at #1 or #2. I'm expecting my ranking will change after tube rolling a bit, and some headphones might be on the chopping block.

My modest collection of headphones is split between open and closed backs and all of them lean to the easy to drive side of the spectrum. My ranking follows along with evolving musical tastes and the chains used to feed the phones. The higher ranked generally being more recent additions that reflect chasing improved sonic performance and willingness to pay. No surprises here! Seems I alternate open to closed back but that is purely for pragmatic reasons so as to maximize opportunities to enjoy this hobby.

Focal Utopia (1st generation)
Focal Stellia
Sennheiser HD820
Sennheiser HD800
Focal Elear
Sony MDR-Z7
Master & Dynamic MD40

Shooting to kick all my open backs to the curb with a Yamaha YH-5000SE. They tick a lot of boxes and could be my end game.

Yeah, you don't get any of the 58X's veil or grain with the S2. And ofc it scales like the other 300 ohm cans in the series, maybe a bit better because of the more precise imaging? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think I have achieved my "endgame" list.

My "endgame" definition: If any of these were to break, I would buy exactly the same model to replace them.

1. Audeze Lcd-x 2021 revision
2. Sennheiser HD600 marble
3. Grado RS2e
oh, the shame!

curse of "endgame" strikes again...not 6 months after initial post...

1. Audeze Lcd-x 2021 revision ...still no.1 :)
2. Sennheiser HD600 marble ...sold
3. Grado RS2e ...sold

New endgame list (for real though!)

  1. lcd-x 2021
  2. Sennheiser HD800s
  3. Arya stealth

:)
