AKG K272's; not because they were bad or anything, just got reamed on the price.
AKG K 272 HD
Very harsh treble and some weired sub bass performance with some amps that sounds very glitched.
Funny, not to dispute your findings or start a discussion, but to me the K272 treble is the smoothest of all my headphones. Not harsh or strident at all (and I'm very sensitive to this).
When a recording has too much treble artifacts and sibilance, I always reach to the K272 to make it sound listenable.
Bass is also one of the best to my hearing.
It shows how we all hear different.
That and/or it's the system you are hooking it up to. What do you run the K272 on? I'm thinking of getting the K271 MKII as a closed back some time.
See my profile (http://www.head-fi.org/u/71967/tiemen) for my equipment. The amp is not a regular commercial sold one.
But I doubt if the system is a factor here.
In all the reveiws I've read of the K271/272, they are praised for their smooth and grain free treble.
What can cause problems however are the ear pads, The ones on the K272 are velours with a rather small ear opening. I can't get a good seal with them, and got other pads on them for more comfort and better sound in relation to my ears.,
I had a K240 MKII but it's away for now, will get it back eventually. I know what you mean by the pads the K240 velours had too small of an opening, the pleathers were fine comfort wise. I have a couple sets of hm5 pads laying around and angled hm5 pads. So basically a tube amp? I'm planning on getting the Valhalla 2 and the K271 as my next audio purchases. I'm happy with my K712, K612, and HD 545(may upgrade to HD 600 in time) as my open backs.
The HM5 pads works great with the K271/272.
The amp I use with them is solid state. I didn't like the pairing with my tube hybrid.
BTW: this is getting a bit off topic.....
