My daily drivers - qian39, zen LL and yincrow x6 all met the same fate: the housing eventually comes apart while rustling about in my pocket then the internals get promptly torn apart. I know using a case is recommended but I feel like this issue could be avoided with improved construction quality.

Anyone else had this problem?

I wouldnt mind paying extra for an epoxy-glued shell or something, especially if the earbud costs $50+ to begin with

For pocket storage I can only recommend buds from Faaeal.

At the end of my original comment you can see that I have tried with different sources. 20Hz-25kHz frequency response was warning I have not cared enough I guess. It was obivious.

To people say which it is warm, if I push them to my ears yes they sound warm like my all previous earbuds MX80, MX170, MX365, TC300 and more. But it still sounds recessed at mid-side like MX470. The previous earbuds were sounding more like audition of football stadium when I pushed them towards to my ears.

We cannot call this earbud flat at mids or natural in anyway. It sounds also dark when you push it to your ears, yes, but it sounds toooooo unnatural, fake.

I hated it.
I would bet it is a QC issue. I recommend to open them and share with us the photos of the drivers.

SHOZY BKSE (Black) Special Edition Audiophile Earbud is avavialble now :relaxed:

https://penonaudio.com/shozy-bkse.html

I've ordered the Shozy bkse
In other words, docomo earbud (New Variant) with OFC cable attached.
The OFC cable version of the Shozy BKSE would probably sound energetic.

I had an intuition that I should use a cheap set of earbuds as I was going to sleep last night because the new dog likes to a) sleep in the bed with me, and b) chew anything she can get her mouth on. So this morning:

Chewed-up Earbuds.jpg

(Sorry, I should have warned you about the gruesome crime scene.)

The victim is a set of Faaeal Rosemarys, my "beater" buds that actually do amazingly well with solo piano. You can see the cable trauma, of course, but the shells themselves are a little scuffed up, otherwise not terribly damaged. (And the foams? Well, I'm just glad those are the only components currently working their way through Lucy's digestive system.)

ANYWAY, it's a $20 set that I can replace if I want to, but if I really wanted a challenge just for the hell of it, is a new cable even an option here?

That's it, thank you, and watch those buds around the puppies!

Oh the tragedy! :)

WOW! What a cutie...

Yes, I don't see why you can't put your own cable on those. You just need to take them apart and solder a new cable on there. You could also take the opportunity to add an MMCX connector if you want to be able to replace the cable (the next time). LOL I'm glad it was not an expensive set though. :)

It's been a minute (i.e. a couple decades) since I last soldered something, but maybe this is a good excuse to relearn the skill? And how do these shells come apart, anyway? (Sorry for asking the intro-level question.)

And yeah, I'd be having a whole different kind of day if Lucy had chewed up my new Serratus or my Rikubuds...

You should be able to take the cap off (the flathead part) fairly easily, and everything comes out that way. Any of our MAGNIFICANT DIYers should be able to guide you much better than I, but from the procedure I have seen it is pretty straightforward and simplistic. It doesn't take a tremendous amount of skill with a soldering iron to do this IMHO.

Edit: Or, here is a pretty nice and easy guide to use for replacing the cable (not for the MMCX method).

the glue that faaeal uses must be made from chuck norris's chest hairs, there is no other material in the universe that sticks like it, if faaeal have applied glue it to her unit, your nails will disappear

LOL How in the world did you find a model small enough to pose for this picture? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :stuck_out_tongue::stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Thank you for your help on this! I'll watch this video, plus I also found the excellent document from the DIY Workroom as a reference.

One last question: The replacement cables I've seen so far are 3.5mm SE. Did I just not find the 4.4mm balanced yet, or does going that route present a set of problems best avoided the first time out? (I know this earbud can be either, but it's balanced now and I figured I'd try to do the same with the replacement. Not the end of the world if I can't.)

If you don't make your cable totally from scratch, you can order a cable with any connector you wish. You will solder it the same way. The only difference (for the cable) between SE and balanced is that you use a separate ground wire for both sides on balanced, where SE shares a ground.
