Time to update again my ranking.... including also cans I have already sold.
Utopia is still my favourite hp, it really has everything I'm looking for, extremely live and dynamic, good timbre, excellent resolution. the only defect, well, you already know, the price...
New second is, incredibly enough given the price, the Denon D7200, vey linear, extended bass, punchy without being boomy, good midrange and highs, IMHO this hp easily beats the HEKv2 to my ears at a fraction of the price. (A note here: I'm using the D7200 with a somewhat unlikely amplifier, a fairly expensive custom 2A3 SE which is 5x the price of the cans, so maybe with other amps YMMV)
Third is HEK v2, since I have the D7200 I find these cans to be a bit too relaxed, very close to being boring.
Fourth HE6, good overall can, but simply not at the same level as the others.
Fourth shared the Stax 507, very natural timbre but lacking bass and liveliness, and with a strong "tunnel" presentation.
1. Focal Utopia
2. Denon AH-D7200
3. Hifiman HEK v2
4. Hifiman HE6 / Stax 507
I'm doing some extensive sessions with the new Abyss Phi, and I will also re-consider my initial impressions on the Sony ZR1, since to a second listening with a different amp I have liked them much more than I remembered.
