Shure 940, it is hard to put one of the most detailed and amazing sounding headphones imo on this list. However, don't get me wrong the build quality is the crappiest on headphones I've seen. They were easily cracked even I babied them maximally -( so sad. i had to return them just after a week of use. I love Shure, I may buy one of their headphones in the future, maybe Shure 1840 or 1540, but the first Shure phone was a big disappointment.

Really? I am no expert, but I thought the HD 800 is amazing. Maybe one day I'll listen to them.

K-701s and HD650.  Two very different sounds.  The 701s are more neutral, the 650s more engaging on "small" musical groups and vocals.

They are like the opposite, usually ppl would love one and hate the other, unusual to dislike both.

Yes, I am in the minority.  The Audeze cans are too dark for me.  I didn't care for the treble or the mid-range of the HD850s.  I'm not sure what the story was with the HD800s.  A number of audio friends listened to the HD800s and agreed.  I've kept them, however, in the hope that it has something to do with extended break-in.

Back in 2007, I accidentally left my HD650s in a spot, that was easily reachable by my samoyed puppy. When I came back home, I found them totally wrecked and chewed up, he had stripped them bare of the soft velour pads. He probably didn't enjoy the rest very much, since it was all plastic, but man, when I saw the end result, I felt like I was gonna pass out.
 
I was in a tough financial spot right at that time, so I wasn't instantly able to afford another pair of HD650, so I bought.... HD590 I believe. The difference was, like, huge - at first I thought they were OK-ish, enough to get me through a month or two, till I could buy HD650 again.
 
Boy, was I wrong. With each passing day, the differences were gradually becoming more and more apparent, and I was getting more and more annoyed, instead of what I was expecting to happen - me adapting to the new headphones and starting to ignore the massive performance gap. Didn't even last a week, I think.
 
I wanted to grab HD580 instead, but they were already discontinued at that time.

HD800s, sorry.  My ears and brain are having more general problems with the HD800s, or else the HD800s are having more general problems with my ears and brain, but alas I was unable to get a refund and I can't be certain they are defective.  Anyway, my experience with them has not been good, but i am one of the very few.

For me has to be the HifiMAN HE-400's. Some might find that shocking after everything I have read, but I stepped into the world of open headphones, and started big. I stepped into the wrong world for my music taste. Closed headphones for me!

I actually owned both of these as well and pretty much agree with you spot on. I know people like the HD800 because it's so analytical and spacious but the treble was pretty irritating to my ears and the midrange seemed too withdrawn. Also found the LCD-2 too dark and closed in.
 
If you're ever around a meet, try to give a listen to the HE-500 from hifiman. I used to own a K701 and HD650 duo and enjoyed the ying/yang on the pair. I think the HE-500 sits right between those two in terms of tonality. I'd easily pick it over the LCD-2 or HD800. Actually, I did end up picking it out of the flagships (HD800, HE-6, HE-5LE, LCD-2, T1).

I'm not sure I follow why not liking the HE-400 means you have to go over to closed phones.
