I would suggest the DT880. As lively and detailed as the k501 but with a better bass foundation and suitable for a broad range of musical genres. The HD580... has the Sennheiser sound.

I like the look of the previous DT 880s. I would call that retro-futuristic look. The current model looks rather cheap and boring. But that´s another story...

I drive my 880s with a Sugden Headmaster, the volume set to 10 o´clock. The sound is detailed with a solid foundation and a wide headstage.

Has the old lady consulted an ear specialist? I´m not shure if the problem would be solved by just increasing the volume. If the hearing loss concerns only certain frequencies the sound perception and speech intelligibility can be affected even if the volume is loud enough and increasing it...
