Hmm.

Well I can see how you say the HF-1 is too bright. I find mine can be too shouty at times. And, yes, the HD650 will never be bright, even out of a Dynamight with silver cables (though, honestly, I don't think the HD650 is dark in such a rig).

I'd suggest you look in to the K 701 or ATH-W5000. Beyers might be okay - I just don't have enough experience with them to say.

Best,

-Jason

If you like the Grado type of sound but would rather have it warmed up a bit, then perhaps a set of Grado RS-2s would fit the bill!

They seem to be; from what I have read, the warmest Grado currently in production.

HF-1 too bright? Wow, coming from my K701 I find these Grados to be rather on the dark side.

I've heard the SR225 called that too.

I had the same problem as OP, I didn't want the darker HD580 or the very bright SR125, so I went right in between with the K240 Studio. Got the bass I want, and the highs too.

MS1 with comfies
HF1 with flats or comfies
AKG K240s
HD580 with an agressive SS amp

IMHO Grados sound MUCH warmer and less shouty with tube amps. Johns reference amp when hs tweeking and developing a new phone is all tube.

perhaps???

munkong before you switch cans get a tube amp. Grado cans love tubes, you will be amazed. I love what the Mapletree Ear Purist + HD does to my Grado's. Good luck.

x2... Grados were designed / tuned by John with tubes (Melos I believe) as his reference amp. I like my earmax, and if I want a brighter, more aggressive sound I use my millet.
