Thanks, but no.

I had a friend of the family do it for me. Cost nothing too

Although I messed up his beautiful work. One mess up is a small cosmetic thing- but it is hard to see in person.
And I also went a little overboard on the lacquer (sp?)

So, you just asked your family friend to make some beautiful cups to your specs? Nice!

Hopefully I'll be able to try them out next time if I see you at another Chicago meet.

Yup. I drew out the specs/diagram and gave him a plastic cup just in case. He got them right on the fist try.

Hope to see you at the next meet though.

Edit: They look amazing, BTW.

Who is this directed at?

If me, I haven't made a comparison side by side with a stock sr-80, so no answer. Purely cosmetic for me.

You might hear a difference because your cups will be longer, like the RS1. More for the sound to bounce off of.

Please post pictures, if you can, when they are done

No camera, but I'd thought I'd let you know about my latest Grado mod

Basically I cut off the thick plastic thing with a few small holes that protects the driver.

Sound waves had to be bouncing off of that thing. No good to sonics can be had from it. Its only purpose is to protect the driver- which I cared only about sonics.

I placed some nylon mesh fabric over the driver to keep any dust any hairs off of it- which can cause distortion. Please don't try this if you plan on selling your grados in the future.

Everybody here has Beyerdynamic 770 headbands. Where did you get them?

Also, how do you take the rods out (want to drill a hole for a clamp-like device)? Any more pulling and it feels like it wants to break.

Woody-ing seems to change two variables from the original plastic housing - increased depth (generally) & material. If I understand correctly, increasing depth increases the chamber volume which must change the way the sound bounces before leaving the chamber. Changing the material also changes the bouncing from a surface texture. I would guess that there must be some resonance issues with different materials.

OK, that said, what improves the SQ more - depth or material?

Material dosen't have as big effect on headphones as it does musical instruments.

With that said: depth will have a bigger effect.
