post your grado mods....

Well, I've just shipped these off but I thought I would post them anyway...

They are woodied SR225's constructed of baltic birch and reusing the original stainless screen. I domed the screen out a bit to give it some dimension. In contrast to the rosewood cans (which I think are beautiful) and their dark wood and leather furniture smoking room appeal, these have more of a 1950's Heywood (furniture) appeal.

I recabled with Mogami star quad with a portable length cable. I love the sound of the stock SR225 but I found these mods brought the sound very close to the RS1.

Hah!!!

Well, consider me seriously, and thoroughly trumped!!

Those are freakin gorgeous!!!

I assume you milled/had milled the cups and had them anodized?

I'm drooling...

I love anodizing....

PLEASE TELL ME.....

It is possible... but I wonder how the lettering was remove so perfectly?

Generally the lettering would be part of the milling process...
so perhaps it was milled out and then re-anodized...

the suspense is killing me...

If I am not mistaken, the lettering is just a black circle glued onto the headphones. Of course, I may be wrong but I've seen mods done like this before, on the 325's and the lower ends as well.

The lettering is in fact simply a plastic insert. I heated the top of the aluminum cup in boiling water to loosen, then pried it out. The button was also removed this way. I then used goof-off to remove the black paint from the stainless steel screen. I did no polishing afterwards...recabled and there you go.

Thanks for the kind words. Your 225 look classy, I wish I could give them a listen.

Here are some in progress pics of my 325i from a few pages back. The last pic shows before...what a difference!

If I understand correctly, increasing depth increases the chamber volume which must change the way the sound bounces before leaving the chamber. Changing the material also changes the bouncing from a surface texture. I would guess that there must be some resonance issues with different materials.

OK, that said, what improves the SQ more - depth or material?

Material dosen't have as big effect on headphones as it does musical instruments.

With that said: depth will have a bigger effect.

xnothingpoetic - Thanks for the response!

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Heres a little mod i did to my SR80s. I pulled the plastic frame out of some "180s" earmuffs

Put the cups through...

And i've got my own sport-band Grados!

They fold up nicely. The only thing is that they press a little too much against your head. Maybe i'll make mounting points for the "antennae" eventually.
