One question though: how do I tell the positive and negative on each side of the driver?

In addition to what @wormsdriver noted above, before de-soldering the wires use a multi-meter to check which is which and place a mark on to indicate which is +/- or draw a picture noting

Here is my configuration.

Magnum V8 driver, rosewood cup, Turbulent labs headband, detachable SMC cable , cable canare , viablue splitter and 3.5mm jack, gimball grado and generic g-cush pads .
I am very satisfied, the more I try a silver cable

Mojo, Cambridge Audio dacmagic 100. But any dedicated dap should really be an upgrade over your laptops audio chipset, after all there’s plenty of reviews to look through on here.

thanks.. but I dont really want to spend huge money for dac right now, can you suggest any affordable ones that are good?
