The discovery thread!
Most positive release audio purchase of 2023 - Truthear Hexa. It's given me confidence/faith to actually do some personal music production again. I've been mixing music with these and checking my mixes with a room simulator plugin, and so far, as I can hear, my mixes are translating fairly well...- rayliam80

Sure. My tips of choice for the CA Honeydew are CA Marshmallows. One thing about the the CA Honeydew is that I have had fit issues with it. The shells of the CA Honeydew are extremely light. Foams allow me to keep them in place while still maintaining a seal. The other thing is the angle of the...- rayliam80

Received my KZ Castor Bass Edition a few weeks ago from the 11.11 sales day. I’ve been comparing it a lot to my KZ ZS10 Pro X. I think the Castor has better timbre and sounds a bit more cohesive/musical. The ZS10 Pro X seems to handle complex music slightly better but at a cost of its timbre in...- rayliam80

Astell&Kern Launches AK HC4 USB DAC
I second this. This needs some clarification. Are the side keys for volume or other features? A big weakness for the A&K dongles have been the lack of volume control on the device itself. Edit: Sorry, I wasn't aware that the AK HB1 existed. That has volume control. It'd be nice if the HC4 also...- rayliam80

Well, I just sucked off my AS16 Pros, both shells. Removed the screens as well. And um, I'm not proud of myself 🤣 And um, it didn't seem to affect them either. Tinniness remains. Thanks for the tip though.- rayliam80

Thanks for the comment link. I have experienced moisture issues with BAs. The way they sound now, it did remind me of that. Just to further explain the storage issue. They were in storage then sent via shipping cargo (1 to 2 month travel time approximately) to my house in the Philippines. I...- rayliam80

Bad news. I had my AS16 Pro (Normal Version) in storage. I haven't used them in probably four or five months. Seems like the bass driver(s) have failed. I'm getting some treble and mids. But there is a huge lack of bass which is not normal. They didn't sound like this before. They sound very...- rayliam80

Low end. Cheap. Generic. Otherwise bang for buck cable thread!
I tried the RedAG 4N on a few of my KZ earphones. The cable, for me, was thinner than I expected. I was hoping to like it more but I didn't. However, I didn't experience any microphonics either. I found it to be comfortable enough. But I also noticed treble and mids seemed to be a bit brighter...- rayliam80

Low end. Cheap. Generic. Otherwise bang for buck cable thread!
I'm using this as per @Redcarmoose recommendation for my EA500. I wanted a balanced cable for it but I didn't want to spend too much. All I can say is that it's serviceable as a balanced cable. I preferred the sound of the balanced Kbear Hazy cable for the EA500 but the flat 2-pin cables just...- rayliam80

The PR2, at least to my ears, has thinner note weight and has more width going on. This leads me to think that it is a step above the ZS10 Pro X but it might be due to the sacrifice in perceived note weight. The ZS10 Pro X does separation really well but it's not quite on the same level as the...- rayliam80

To me, the PR2 x HBB sounds more refined and neutral than the ZS10 Pro X. The ZS10 Pro X is a bit more fun and v-shaped vs the PR2. ZS10 Pro X is more sensitive so it will be less affected by source than something like PR2, which benefits from more amplification/power. The ZS10 Pro X isn't quite...- rayliam80

Yesterday I was pleasantly shocked to hear very little difference between my Letshouer S12 and the PR2 when I used the same cable to roll between them. I don't use regular 2 pin cables with the qdc connectors but tried it anyway. The differences between the two IEM I noticed was that the S12 had...- rayliam80

KZ's IEMs deserves a space in the Discovery Thread. Besides, the majority of IEMs talked about here on this thread are Chinese brands. As far as KZ's current drama, I'm with you on that. Until Head-Fi decides to ban KZ outright, I think it's fine to mention noteworthy KZ releases on the DT.- rayliam80

I'm not a fan of Tyvan either on the FB pages but a lot of the hype reviewers (Crinacle, HBB, etc) can be equally annoying in their own ways of attempts at gate-keeping the hobby.- rayliam80

High-end USB-powered DAC+Headphone amp
Ahh yeah, I forgot about the Sony flagship DAP. I think it has USB-DAC mode too. And yes I would definitely include it in the list. There shouldn’t be a difference between playing files locally from a memory card on a DAP vs playing tracks from your laptop via USB-DAC mode with the same DAP.- rayliam80

Chord Hugo 2 comes to mind. After that, take your pick from the flagship high-end DAPs from Astell&Kern, Cayin, Luxury&Precision and Ibasso. All of them feature USB-DAC mode. Look into it.- rayliam80

Truthear Impressions/Discussion
Tonight, I finally hit it out of the park with the Hexa. The trick, for me, was to push down the Dunu S&S tips as far down the nozzle as possible. That required turning the tips inside-out and then attaching them on the nozzle. It also requires a deep insert into my ears. A minor difference...- rayliam80

USB-C to 3.5mm adapters (DAC) - Let's find the best
I would think the vast majority of us discussing dongles here are using the 4.4mm output. There are a few 2.5mm dongle still out there in production and some 3.5mm only ones too but they’re starting to become rare at this point. 4.4mm seems to be the standard now if you’re into USB dongle dac/amps.- rayliam80

At this price, this is a hard pass from me. I wasn't really entirely impressed by the KZ AS16 Pro last year. I was more impressed by the ZS10 Pro X. And now the PR2? At $100 plus, this has got to be better than the Hexa and the EA500, right? Yeah, I'll wait for reviews...- rayliam80
