The baffle holes actually have something to do with the sound. All ultrasone have them, and I've experimented with the holes before with some lower-end ultrasone, but if you like the sound, leave it as is, because if you break it, it cannot be repaired..
Its just some electrical tape so the stakes arnt crazy high, at worst i suppose i could ask ultrasone for some of the tape pads they use but i dont see anything special about them. What any of the shelf electrical tape couldnt substitute anyway. But you said you experimented? What results did you get?

edit: Got too curious. Taped over the exposed baffle hole, easy take on take off mod. way more bass and a bit of extra stuffyness. Not unexpected to be honest. Its not too bad. I dont know if i prefer it, but it is kinda fun.

edit 2: okay never mind dont do that lol it causes a major air pressure built up in the cup if all 4 holes are plugged

The effect is actually the same as you said. Covering the hole will increase the bass and some lower midrange body. Never punch or remove the hole cover, though, or you'll lose all the bass. In some case i only cover it with some felt materials, so i can control the increased bass/body.
I have mentioned before in my older post that i mod my edition 11 with tissue covering, it covers some of the hole that you mentioned..

Very strange development after listening to these critically. One major flaw is that I find them a bit too bright up top. Just too much energy up top that every thing else sometimes gets drowned out. However randomly when trying them out verses other headphones they suddenly started sounding very good. turns out I had put them on backwards, shooting the sound away from my ear, the soundstage sounded nicer and the excessive treble vanished yet nothing suffered due to it, bass response improved as well. Not to mention the fit didn't suffer at all. It might even be more comfy this way, I just reversed the connector pins and I'm all set.

Im not sure what to think of this..

edit: I'm going to keep testing, I think there may have been a connection issue to start with so don't take my word for it. but feel free to try

Update on the Edition 8 EX. People mentioned a reduced midrange and I can see it. The upper mids are pulled back. Reducing presence. I recently got an ifi xdsd gryphon which can completely resolve this. The s-logic ex sounds off-putting when you first put them on but once you get used to it. It sounds so natural that going back to other headphones feels wrong.

I have two complaints, one small, one big.
Small: The right lemo connector pull down lock jiggles more than the left, making noises when moving about. Poor qc.
Big: The comfort is killing me. It has super strong clamp force and creates pressure that leaves my head feeling funny after. I can even sometimes feel my pulse. Having long hair does not help. Im 50/50 on returning these based on how finicky the comfort is.

Its so disappointing because I adore everything about these headphones from the sound and build. They would be truly endgame but feeling like my ear is being squashed in, is just not worth the money I paid and i dont like feeling a constant need to adjust every few minutes. If i cant fix it. It goes back and i wait until ultrasone make somthing better.

The Ultrasone always had a strong clamp, and the hard padded ear cushions also contribute to the tightness. Try stretching them for 2-3 days in a row with stacked books or something to stretch them, the comfort will improve significantly. I can't argue with the connector, as I have problems with my edition M connector too.

That's the plan. I got some stuff to stretch it. It also doesn't help that the pressure seems to be focused on the front of my ears and not evenly distributed. However, I did stretch it for a few hours earlier on the lowest setting which seems to have improved it a little. I'm going to stretch it on both low and Max. See what that does.

Once I know I'm committed to this headphone is when I plan to buy a better cable anyway, so that's a Non-Issue.

For several years I didn't really use the 8 EX's as I could never get a proper seal for my ears. The sound was thin and metallic since there was no seal to let the bass or midrange come through. The headphones seemed to be tight, but the angle of the drivers wasn't quite right. One day I *finally* realized the headband is metal, and can be easily bent/shaped by hand. The sound difference was night and day once I bent the headband inward a bit. Over a few days I realized the clamp was way too much though, so I bent the headband outward a little until it was perfect.

Bending/Molding the headband to a proper fit just takes a few seconds. It took me years to realize that though.

Good news. Stretching did improve things very noticeably. I can live with this level of clamp now and the strange pressure on my right ear was also largely due to my hair which i need to be more careful of pulling back before putting it on. xD

The pulled back mids and midbass can sometimes leave me wanting. HOWEVER. The XBass option on my gryphon solves both frequency issues completely. So thats not even an issue. Once im past the return date and know im committed ill get a better cable and I should be riding high on this headphone.

Its funny how similar the treble is to the edition 15 yet not at the same time. The edition 15 was grainy, this is about the same level but its just more natural, if still emphasised and slightly splashy.

I would liked to have given it another chance on this new gear and with the burn in and gear knowledge and chain i have now but im not complaining since I have saved £700 verses the preowned edition 15 that smelled like the back of an old storage warehouse.

I know the bass on the edition 15 seemed higher quality with a better texture but it was just too much and bled into the mids. If only ultrasone can strike that balance.

Before making the decision, it's better to check if the connector problem is on the cable or the headphone connector because if it's on the headphones, it's better to return them because you don't want to disassemble the headphones to repair them.

To be clear. Its not the connection itself that's jiggling. its the handle you pull down to release the cable.
Is that normal? It seems to vary based on what plug is on what side.

Edit: the connection itself can be wiggled though. It makes no noise so thats not an issue in itself. But just encase its related. Id like to know.
Edit 2: okay yeah the R cable wiggles more despite being on ether side. The right side connection seems to allow for more wiggle of the connector itself. I sent this query to ultrasone themselves. I got half a month left on the warranty so i got time to figure this out.

Update: I returned the edition 8 ex, i prefer my icans even to it.
Comfort i just couldnt overcome. and the tuning was too light on bass and mids. If one aspect was brought up it would be amazing. but as is, i could not justify the price when i already own ultrasones i love.
Anyway, i ordered the edition eleven and will be waiting for it. This is a shot in the dark but i got a good deal on an great quality item

I love the icans and tio due to their midfocus, the icans have bass and forward mids but calm treble, the tio has lush balanced mids and otherwise harmless neutral bass and treble but is so high fidelity in the mids it evens everything out when used properly.
the edition 8 ex i just couldnt find music that other headphones in my collection didnt do as well if not better. big shame.

edit:2 Just letting everyone know, latest blog on ultrasones web site had a 50% off code for the founders series open, i just HAD to snatch a pair for collection.
This is truly the peak of my hobby.

Edition Eleven came a few days ago, have been braking it in since.
First impression is that it sounds nothing like other Ultrasones. A surprisingly subtle and refined presentation. Present mids, very full but correct bass, not too tight or loose and the treble is surprisingly relaxed. A very organic sound to it all.

I cant get over how good the bass is. Close to perfect as I have ever heard. The amount of refinement it has where it seems to be focused on a smooth, hifi presentation over that bright detailed crystalline presentation of other ultrasones can sometimes leave me wishing for more on tracks that are meant to be harsh but otherwise its so GOOD at what it does, im left in goosebumps. The surround sound nature of it is unmatched. Ive never had something more 3D.

There is just one issue i need answering...
Does anyone else have the headband occasionally click and clack when handling it? Its louder on the right cup than the left, loud enough to be slightly irritating.
