^^ haven't use Mac for a while. Check if there is some sort of workaround, I was using my HD600 with the lineout and was very happy with the results.

Unfortunately, Macbooks disable volume control when the x5 is turned on.
Too bad, I was hoping I could replace my D3 with the x5 as a portable desktop DAC. I guess I still could, as long as I don't use high impedance headphones.

I don't think that's the case.  I use a MacBook Pro with the X5 classic as DAC all the time..  iTunes has a volume control and it allows you to use USB out by-passing the computer DAC. Any of the HD audio software such as Audirvana, Amara, or Fidelio can be used as players with volume control in the computer.  They pro divide improved play-back compared to iTunes.  They may require that Soundflower be installed--can't' recall. Bit perfect is another program you might consider. It plays through iTunes but ensures playback is of the native file with no conversions try iTunes.

Maybe I am missing something in your problem but if you want to use the X5 as a DAC it can be done.  PM me if you have questions.

Happy New Year to All!

Thanks for the response. I'm going to try out the audio software you recommended.

I have no problem using the X5 as a DAC, but it's not as amplified as I would hope (like the D3).  The volume issue was pertaining to the line out.

On that topic, am I employing the X5 amp as well when it's in DAC mode, or is it using the source's amp (Macbook, in my case)? Just curious why the X5's amp seems to lack power when it's in DAC mode.

That's wrong too.  It should have plenty of power in DAC mode.  There are two outputs.  One is line-out which is fixed that is used to pass to external amps or pre-amps, the other is intended for headphones/IEMs and allows volume control. You may be set-up wrong.  Somebody here will chime in and explain or I will explain after New Years.

Any X5 owners using an Amazon 128gb MicroSD by Sandisk? I picked one up this week and I cannot get it to read...

I've formatted it, scanned, and rescanned, but the X5 keeps giving me the 'Format Not Supported' message. Thoughts?

I have Sandisk 128GB from US Amazon, bought in November 2015. I had no issues with it. IIRC I formatted it to FAT32 on my Macbook, transferred files and it just worked in X5 (gen 1).

Cheers!

You must format the card inside the X5. Or, make certain you are formatting to FAT32.

To avoid any confusion, just allow the X5 to format it.

This reminds me, Amazon has 128gb PNY cards on their daily deal for $34, although I can't imagine that'll lost long until they're sold out...  maybe I should pick one up

I tried once and it froze on me. I'll try again.

Does running a modded firmware affect the formatting ability?

I'm okay with most of the UI quirks in the first gen, but there's one bug that kills me: when the screen is asleep and I try to increase the volume, the player starts the song over (this is intermittent). I'm using firmware 2.5. Maybe 2.6 fixes it?
