The Fiio X5 Thread

Does anyone use the line out with high-impedance headphones?

I would avoid doing that, you would be damaging the headphones.

Having a higher impedance means having more sensitivity, so it is even worse to push more current on them. I remember that impedance means pulling more voltage swing and less power output, and this can damage the driver of headphones.

Hi, longtime Fiio x5 user here.  Just tried FW 2.6 and just like FW 2.5 it breaks the linux DAC functionality, anyone else notice this?  Anyone know of a workaround?  I rolled it back to FW 2.4 and the linux DAC functionality is restored.  Bummer, I was hoping to benefit from the improved scrollwheel performance, but not if it means I can't use the X5 as a soundcard for my laptop, this is one of its best features!  Any tips or shared info would be much appreciated...  --Josh

works perfectly fine with my Trisquel GNU/linux distro, using linux-libre kernel 4.2.8.

hmmm...  very odd.  with firmware 2.4 when i mount my x5 as a dac it shows up as one of the options in the /sound/output dialog box.  with firmware 2.6 it doesn't show up and my usual default "speakers, built in audio" option is gone as well.  this causes some odd behavior, like google chrome launching very slowly, and being unable to load certain websites, e.g. youtube.  rolling back to firmware 2.4 fixes the odd behavior.

specifics might help:  i am running ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bit on a thinkpad t530.

Don't know if I wanna upgrade my fiio X1 but was looking at the fiio x3 ii or pay little more and get the x5. The X1 is slow loading and everything and looking for mainly get better sound quality and just recently bought magni 2 and HD 600 so I wanna hook my dac with the magni 2 and HD 600 and maybe sell the x1. The x 5 dual Sd slot looks pretty interesting and the interface

It turns out that it's just one album that won't export. Just happened to be the first FLAC lp I loaded. Weird, because it's the FLAC files that came free with the purchase of the vinyl (Nick Cave), nothing piratey about it.

That is pretty odd. I am curious, have you tried converting the FLAC to WAV, and then back to FLAC? You should not have to but it might work.

I'm using my X5 as a DAC/AMP for my Macbook Pro. The DAC is pretty good, but it's not as amped as my audioengine d3. I really have to crank the volume to about 80% to get results with my hd600's (even on high gain). With the d3, I only the turn the volume up to about 40%.

If you are using as a dac, in my experience with Windows PCs, you can control the volume from the PC, so connecting your headphones to the line out of the X5 is an option. Also you should notice the lineout sounds better than the headphone out.
