The Fiio X5 Thread

The X5 is better than the X3ii, period.

Depends on preference I think, and "better is subjective"

I certainly prefer my X3ii (all features - not just SQ) to the X5 original.  In that regard - the X3ii is "better" for my needs.

They are both great DAPs though :)

Hi, niron

The page you posted is a review for X3II/X5II. The newest firmware of X3II/X5II has included those features and improvements. If there are no big bugs with the newest firmware, it will be the final firmware for X3II/X5II. Sorry for bringing mistake.

Can the X3ii or X5ii be used as stand-alone DACs for a desktop headphone amplifier with RCA inputs?

Hi, shuto77

The DAC of X3II or X5II is designed for the computer. You can collect the lineout port of X3II/X5II to the RCA inputs of your amplifer using a 3.5mm male to 2-male RCA male adapter.

I agree.

More refined sound. Bigger sounstage. Greater details. Better in every way.

The X3ii isn't bad, though. Just not as good.

I wish I liked the x3II more. It's a very slick device. The sound signature is too dark, a little grainy and overall lower resolution. Clearly different, and IMO, inferior to the X5.

Never traded up from X5 as hated the 2nd generations lack of a dedicated digital out. At the time I demoed, very difficult getting the combined sockets lead. While easier now, X5 does just fine feeding a Hugo.

Thanks for the information! I really appreciate your commitment to the community.

I have another question: When the X5ii or X3ii are in dac mode, is the headphone amplifier engaged, or can we toggle it on/off?

I like the idea of connecting this to my computer as a dac/amp, and directly to my amp as a dac. Is it also possible to connect my Android 6.0 phone to the X5ii and X3ii as a digital transport?

I understand I'm trying to use the device differently than it was designed to be used.

Thanks!

Hi, shuto77

When the X5II or X3II works in DAC mode, if you are using the lineout port, it will bypass the amplifier module of itself.

It may be possible to use the X3II or X5II as a DAC to the mobiles according to some feedback from our users. But we haven't test it yet. You can have a try using a micro USB to micro USB cable.

i found that fiio the bass not punchy enough

i quite like cowon player sound

I always use my X5 (classic) with a Headstage Arrow 5P amp => sounds great imo.

The Arrow is a very small and light amp with gain, treble and (2) bass switches, incredible value for the money.
Using X5 line out (skipping its amp), battery life almost doubles...

I also have a Cowon Plenue 1 but with some iems (my 1plus2 for example) I prefer the above combination

I don't know much about DAP's as I have been listening to music via a turntable and an iPhone 6. This is a very broad and basic question but does the X5 2nd generation offer noticeably better sound than the iPhone or is more dependent on the quality of the music file? Would moving an iTunes library to the X5 be a cumbersome process ?

If you are on a Mac with iTunes you can get "Dapper" software and sync your iTunes playlist to the FiiO.

There's a BIG power output difference, so there's that 1st of all. Even after volume matching some (not all) of my "civilian" friends have blind tested hearing a difference (I always blind test) but I think successfully differentiating between the two would also depend upon the headphone used.

I just dragged and dropped my entire iTunes library to the X5 mk2, took about 15 minutes, if that, i didn't time it. Library is about 75 gb.
