The discovery thread!

I sometimes wonder if I'd like to research an experiment. An experiment where people try seemingly identical looking IEMs with identical tunings... But their driver configuration is all over the place, from 1DD to a 5-way 1DD+7BA+4EST and one of them is a planar magnetic and I could go on... But I tell no one that this is the case.

I wonder if I'm the one who's in for a nasty surprise in this aspect, mainly because to an extent, I want to believe that I have no reason to go so overboard when designing an IEM.

Remember Symphonium bragging about most blind testers thought there was a DD inside Helios?

Can be good or bad though

Good as single DD = coherency, timbre?

Bad as single DD = not so technical?

They were talking about the bass impact.

Very few DD can sound as crisp and tight as the two BA in Helios though. Maybe Effect Audio Gaea, but that one is an exception rather than norm. So. I don’t think Helios sound like it has a usual DD woofer inside.

Now do the same things to cable 😉
legend has it, someone did in CanJam or something.
manage to convince some people (apparently including Zeos) about cable effect on... Speakers i think.
I read on a comment by cable seller on how he manage to convince some "audio youtuber" about cable effect on audio gears.

I kinda forgot the details on what event and what gear they tried on (didn't quite remember whether headphones or speakers), didn't think too much of it other than its interesting story.

I don't and personally I don't find it something to brag about either. If anything the surprise is finding out a similar experiment has been conducted before.

Specially when this exists. Been recommended this a few times in an attempt to make a basshead IEM despite being a pair of BA. I simply tend to gravitate towards DD as a woofer because these cost like $45-50 the pair of modules, so no good for a budget IEM. Not that I know how to estimate final asking price based on the cost of the raw materials.

I can't speak from experience as to what a BA would sound like for any frequency range, so there's that.

Thanks bro, yeah I've heard good things about EW200, how is this vs CVJ Mei and EM6L?
I found the Mei either sibilant in 01/11 settings or too laid back in 10 setting. But Azla Xelastec tips made Mei usable for me in 01 setting.

I don't know how reliable is this guy, obviously without testing myself the iems I cannot comment...but it's very strange how for him two completely styles of tunning are amazing for competitive fps.
He's the only reviewer that does competitive gaming to that level (as far as I am aware anyway), makes a lot of good observations and points, he focuses on popular FPS titles and is fairly high ranked in the games he plays, he's also gone through quite a number of sets. He's reliable.

FIIO FH11 is released, skipping this one since I had issues with FD11 design. After all the backlash about the cable, it is weird they continue with it. But I guess it would cost them lots to remake the shell design.
