16/44.1 kHz not 24/96 kHz

It depends on what you're using. USB is capped at 16/44.1 but not optical or coaxial (FWIR). I was going off of Maverick Audio's site of accepted sample rates/bit depths. It's possible it downsamples, but it does so nicely and sounds great to me.

<Edit> Looking around the Condensed FAQ Thread, 24/96 looks to be true. The USB is also 16/48 rather than 44.1

I tried getting a discount from J&R on the HD598... No dice. Sennheiser says no discounts. Does anyone know if this is permanent (as it is with Apple, Grado, etc.)? In which case I'd just buy for $250 on Amazon.

I have no inside information, but reading the facts it is all but certain that Sennheiser is enforcing a MAP that sets a floor on retail prices.  Whether or not this continues depends on the market, including the economic conditions--which for the most of the headphone consuming world falls between "bad" and "sucks".

I do not like companies who try to increase their price on their products to the consumer by coercing their vendors to sell at an artificially high price.  Therefore I will tend to take my business away from Sennheiser to another line who does not follow the MAP business model.

Oh man, thanks for the info. I agree, it's tough to pay full-price on a headphone that was 35% less expensive two months ago. This is turning me away from Sennheiser as well. If you look at coupons at various stores, they now exclude Sennheiser products. This sucks.
