Their going rate (new) is 180 bucks but you can get them used, but in very good condition, by this seller who is selling it for a mere 10 bucks, in 1000 installments.
I would get a TubeMagic D1. I have one and love it. $200 and you get a 24/96 DAC and a decent built in amplifier.
16/44.1 kHz not 24/96 kHz

I tried getting a discount from J&R on the HD598... No dice. Sennheiser says no discounts. Does anyone know if this is permanent (as it is with Apple, Grado, etc.)? In which case I'd just buy for $250 on Amazon.
I have no inside information, but reading the facts it is all but certain that Sennheiser is enforcing a MAP that sets a floor on retail prices. Whether or not this continues depends on the market, including the economic conditions--which for the most of the headphone consuming world falls between "bad" and "sucks".
I do not like companies who try to increase their price on their products to the consumer by coercing their vendors to sell at an artificially high price. Therefore I will tend to take my business away from Sennheiser to another line who does not follow the MAP business model.
