Rank the IEM's you've heard

If you get paid for it, you are professional.
But does getting paid for it mean your opinion is more valid than those who do it for the love of the hobby? Or here's a twist, does geting paid for it mean you have a vested interest, and therefore your opinion is arguably less valid? Since it's almost 2am I'll leave that ethical conundum here and revisit it in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee.

The noble viking seems interesting with 2DD 4BA and 4EST! Seems like EE dual W9+ will finally have a competitor.

FWIW, I don't consider IE900 and Z1R to be that similar. Their midranges are quite different with IE900 having a warmer tonality and more lower mid presence, and Z1R having more upper mids and clarity with less note weight thickness. The bass on IE900 is more linear between mid and sub bass, and the stage presentation is quite different too. IE900 has better cohesion and Z1R has more grandness in its imaging and separation.

But I'm no professional, so what do I know :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
All IEMs are different. I didn't say they were the same. You can use it with an Apple Dongle and it sounds great for less than $250.

EQ and some burn-in. I don't believe much in latter but it did smooth out after 30-50 hours.

Cable cost me 30x more than CRA but I love this combo. Unfortunate about the QDC connector thought.
I don't really subscribe to burn in so I'm not expecting anything there. Also I think it's less that treble is sharp, it's that the midrange is maybe a bit thin, making the treble feel slightly hotter than otherwise. But yea these are seriously good for 15 dollars. Bass extension is crazy especially again for how cheap these are.

At the moment I have an effect audio grandioso, which is like 13 times the price of the iem. Feels very wrong.

I had the OG MEST and sold them. What IEM excels at the priorities you're referring to?

I'm looking for something that is musical and a good compliment to the Z1R, might be my new EDC (was the SA6, then Timeless, then the KB Believe, and currently Ikko OH10). Looking for comfort to wear while at work 8hrs. I mostly use 1 IEM at a time bc I answer phones during the day, but also want something to listen to casually while relaxing.
how would yall rank the following IEMs? I am wanting to get a new one, but undecided on which way i want to go (1 high dollar IEM, multiple mid-level IEMs).

- Monarch MKII
- MEST MKII
- Senn IE900
- Oriolus Isabellae
- Andromeda 2020
- FiiO FD7
- Dunu Zen Pro
- Moondrop Variations

I wasn't referring to any specific priorities but each of the IEMs above imho have specific strengths that single them out.

Monarch II - If you're looking for a "referency" set then this would be my pick of the bunch you list there-- I don't find them particularly emotive or musical though...but I didn't get that much time with them either.

Senn IE900 - To my ears, during my brief demo, these came across as a bass & treble specialist to me. Of all the IEMs on this list they're probably the most similar to the IER Z1R in terms of FR-- though the 900 from memory has more pronounced treble & bass and less of an upper mids emphasis. The IE900 also has that wonderful single driver coherence. If you're after something balanced or with forward mids this wouldn't be my first choice but YMMV there.

Isabellae - These are some of my faves. I would rec them if you're after a mid-centric & intimate sound with great instrumental timbre. Isolation is crap so they're not the best EDC. They're my number 1 IEM when I want to relax at night.

Andromeda 2020 - In some ways this set is the safest rec as a compliment to the IER Z1R as it plays well with everything, is musical and engaging, sufficiently technical and utterly non-fatiguing. Still probably my number 1 rec to someone knowing nothing of their tastes.

Fiio FD7 - Amazing top end clarity, resolution & extension let down by weak sauce bass that gives the overall sound a rather clinical feel. YMMV.

Dunu Zen Pro - My current bae. I think they'd make a good compliment to the IER Z1R just be warned with some sources (and to some ears) they can border on being shouty and fatiguing up top.

Hope this helps

2020 final roundup/update…

D4D05346-F4CA-49A7-AD34-A5849563BA21.JPEG

Caveats/opening points:

1) This list is just a reflection of my personal experience and preferences—it is by no means meant to be an objective appraisal of any IEMs’ value or worth.

2) What I am after, with the listening experience, is emotional involvement. All other factors-- technical proficiency, perceived tonal accuracy, neutrality etc.-- are secondary for me. That’s not to say that those factors don’t play a role—but for me they are simply the means to the desired end of emotional engagement.

3) Different brands each seem to have a distinct “house sound” or general tuning philosophy that resonates with different people in different ways. To use an analogy, I enjoy both Star Trek and Star Wars, but Star Wars strikes a deeper chord with me…not because it’s any better than Star Trek, but because it resonates more with me internally. I similarly connect with Campfire Audio IEMs in a way that I just don’t, or haven’t yet with, say, any 64 Audio IEMs I have heard. This does not mean I think Campfire is objectively “better”-- I just that happen to vibe more with their products and general aesthetic. I know there are many for whom the reverse is true however, as they say, YMMV.

4) The more time I spend in this hobby and the more IEMs I hear the less I feel inclined to break an IEM down into its constitutent parts—bass, mids, treble, technicalities etc. More important to me than individual factors are how they all play together and coalesce into the overall gestalt of an IEM’s presentation. For example, on paper the Elysium’s bass seems like a deal breaker…but in the context of the signature on the whole it’s absolutely perfect and, in retrospect, somewhat revolutionary.

Heavenly Tier-- The best I have tried.

1) Vision Ears Elysium =>
The Vision Ears Elysium has, in a very short time, totally and completely won me over. The mid-centric presentation with its subdued bass was a bit weird at first, especially after days of rapid fire jumps from the MEST to the Andro to the Solaris…but once I upped the gain on my n6ii and just sat back and let the Ely do its thing it wasn’t long before I was swept up in its beautiful textures and gentle nuances. The bass (or comparative lack thereof) was a bit jarring at first but once I forgot about trying to break things into pieces and isolate and compare and instead focused on the signature as a unity I found myself immersed in a blissful and beautiful world of sound-- I’ve thrown pretty much every kind of music I can think of at it – including lots of EDM, d&b other bass heavy stuff and, while often different than what I am used to, the Ely brings enough of its charm to the fore that, instead of lamenting change I find myself instead finding new things to love about old favorites. The Elysium is the first IEM I’ve heard that sounds a tier above everything else I’ve heard and it’s the first IEM I have heard that constitutes a clear and decisive upgrade from the Andromeda 2020 at doing what I value most in an IEM, namely its ability to connect and engage me emotionally with what I am listening to within a precisely laid out 3-d headspace. At first Elysium’s driver configuration struck me as crazy. Now I regard it as a brilliant act of vision and daring that was perfectly executed. More detailed impressions here.

Elite Tier-- the "I could live with one of these as my only IEM" tier

2) Campfire Audio Solaris SE/OG => Balanced and highly engaging all-rounder with solid technicalities across the board and a wonderful natural timbre. For much of the last two years this has been my standard bearer—until the Elysium came into my life. Through the right source (the PAW S1, for example) they are positively magical and hold their own with the Elysium surprisingly well. There are other IEMs that excel them at certain things but I haven’t found anything that does “everything” as well to my ears. I’ve never crossed the $3K threshold either yet, so there’s that. The SE and OG are way more similar than different to my ears. The SE feels like a slightly refined and polished OG with some more presence in the mids and as well as mildly improved technicalities and dynamics across the spectrum. Here is my OG Solaris review and here is a 4-way shootout I did with the SE Solaris, VE8, u12t and Legend X.

3) Campfire Audio Andromeda MW10 => After an impressive leap out of the gate and a couple hours of a/b’ing I came to the conclusion that the MW10 is basically a Solaris SE minus the DD. Ultimately I can't say for sure if the MW10's completely capturing my heart in the few hours after I got them is due to how much I've missed the "Andro sound" since selling my 2020 vs. whatever "secret sauce" the MW10 may have over other versions of the Andromeda...but wow they are utterly captivating to listen to. I rank them just slightly below the Solaris for reasons of personal preference, and that on the whole I find the Solaris to be essentially a refined and evolved Andromeda. Sadly I never got to compare the MW10 and 2020 directly but my gut is that that same tweaks and polishes that were brought to the Solaris SE also found themselves in the 2020. Interestingly the MW10 holds the same ceramic tuning chamber that, alone of the Solaris variants, the SE has inside it.

4) Campfire Andromeda 2020/Vision Ears VE8 => These comprise much of the essential DNA of my #2, but a little more coherent and minus the dynamic bass. The Andromeda is probably the most instantly accessible, easily likeable IEM I've heard and I can see why it remains the de-facto reference IEM for many even after all these years. Prior to owning the MW10 I would have said that I still prefer the Solaris overall as the dynamic low end and more "in your face" staging is more to my liking. However for someone looking for a "do everything" IEM that is immersive, inoffensive, and engaging it's hard to think of a better recommendation than the Andromeda...it puts many, much more expensive IEMs to shame

The VE8 evokes a similar emotional response to the Andromeda and differs a wee bit in that they sacrifice a bit of space between notes/instruments for a lusher, slightly thicker sound. I could be happy with either of these ultimately, but the air and spaciousness of the Andro sound may win the day for me in a pinch.

5) Unique Melody MEST => Addicting sub-bass, peerless staging and technicalities relative to what I have heard, and an airy top end sparkle. Ultimately they are a little more "v-shaped" than I like and on the whole I prefer the more forward and organic mids and balanced sound of IEMs like the Andromeda and Solaris. The MEST can be absolutely spell-binding to listen to with its insane technical response, but behind the pyrotechnics and flash, it doesn’t quite draw me in emotionally like the first 4 on this list do. Here is a 3-way comparison I did with the MEST, Andromeda and Solaris SE.

Excellence Tier-- the "each of these do something better than anything else in its class but ultimately don't work as well for me as an all rounder" tier.

6) Empire Ears Legend X => Bass cannon of the gods...peerless with genres like hip-hop and live funk, but not really an all-rounder-- the bass suffocates me as often as it rocks my world. In a sense the most notable thing about the Legend X is its midrange, specifically how it manages to be so present, bodied and detailed despite the insane bass. If you could get LX mids in something like the MEST the very earth might crack open due to the abundance of power and greatness that would generate. Please don’t tell me that’s what the Odin is as I have no plans (or means) to go there.

7) QDC Anole VX => My favorite bass from a BA set...a little fatiguing in the upper mids/lower treble...but that's its only real drawback. Superbly detailed, resolving vibrant and (imho) highly engaging for the most part, though it can at times sound a little too analytic and sterile.

8) 64 Audio u12t => I understand the love for these but I can't relate to it. They’re technically very proficient, tonally very safe...but ultimately not very exciting (to me). I once likened the u12t and Andromeda to the "mars and venus" of IEMs...and I stand by this to some extent. Listening to the u12t is intellectually stimulating-- it lays bare and presents accurately all the elements of whatever you're listening to, is gloriously detailed, and tonally capavble...but it all kind of falls flat for me and fails to evoke an emotional response. Conversely the Andromeda never fails to sweep me off my feet every time I listen to it. The u12t gets respect because it's great at what it does, but it's not for me.

9) Sony IER Z1R => Delicious bass but imho not quite tight enough or worth the sacrifice to the lower mids. Signature wowed me at first but on the whole I found it a little fatiguing and disjointed between the highs and lows.

10) Campfire Audio Atlas => Loads of fun but treble can be intense at times and didn't really succeed as an all-rounder for me. As this list indicates pretty much everything I’ve owned since has bettered it.

now. Vision Ears Elysium still to be top tier for u ? or which one?

Added MEST MKii.

1) Vision Ears Elysium => Still the best due largely to its capacity to draw me in to a palace of bliss and elicit a deep emotional response from me.
2) Campfire Audio Dorado 2020 => I came for the bass but stayed for the naturally textured and bodied mids. The most transparently fun, solidly technical and naturally engaging IEM I've heard.
3) Sony IER Z1R => Similar in a lot of ways to #2 (wonderfully natural sound, bass is just as good) and just as fun...it loses points from me only because its FR is not as close to my personal target as the Dorado's.
4) Campfire Solaris/SE => I've gone back and forth with the Solaris and IER Z1R for much of my audio life. Solaris has my preferred FR, and I would say is slightly better techically, but the Sony at its best is more fun to listen to which is why it ultimately pulled ahead for me for the time being. Solaris SE still has the nicest male vocals I've heard.
5) Campfire Andromeda 2020/MW10 => Possibly the most instantly and generally appealing IEM I've ever heard. Still my #1 general rec for someone knowing nothing of their particular tastes.
6) UM MEST Mk1 => Not as purely emotive as anything above but in terms of raw spectacle and "wow factor" it is probably near or at the top. Spellbinding to listen to and so much fun.
7) EE Legend X => King of the beasts of bass...and on its own terms it's still peerless in some respects. But it loses points as a generalist for me because I find the signature to be lacking in air over longer listening sessions. In terms of bass texture it's on par with though different than the Dorado 2020 and IER Z1R. (LX -> boom boom, Z1R -> woob woob, Dorado 2020 -> thump thump is the easiest way to distinguish the 3 to my ears...each excels at its own thing).
8) VE VE8 => Wonderfully emotive sig with some of the nicest BA bass and midrange in the game. Loses points as I found it sibilant up top at times.
9) QDC Anole VX => My idea of a perfectly reference/technical sound that is minty fresh and imho super engaging...the only thing I'd change would be to lessen some of the vibrance in the upper mid/lower treble region.
10) UM MEST Mkii => My impressions of the MKii are that they clarified and pushed the mids forward but neutered the rest of the sound. Bass quantity and (imho) quality are a step down and what I described as the "chamber of secrets like staging" of the original is now totally gone. Ultimately a decently balanced and engaging IEM in its own right but has that "revised by a committee" feel to it and lacks soul and character of the OG.
11) 64 Audio Nio => A nicely balanced decently resolving signature with good bass. I found the mids to be lacking body/a little thin at times. I could easily get used to it and probably easily live with the Nio as my only IEM.

Up Next possibly: (universe seemingly not cooperating but hopefully one day willing) The Odin, Jolene uni if one ever comes to fruition, whatever VE or Campfire may announce in the future.

Totally different IEMs with different specialties and use cases...if you can shed some light on what you're looking for and what you like I can give you better recommendations.

I like it, the treble, the mids are good. The details sparkle. The wide states. Identify the pieces of music well. The bass is not very heavy. My favorite style of music. Pop rock. Fast songs, slow songs of all types. But not like heavy metal, or sing songs alone.

Vision Ears Elysium I'm interested in it. Seeing you give a good rating. I've never experienced listening to headphones that much. I'd like to get some input from experienced people.

If I'm going to upgrade from this one, which one should I go for a good value model?

I have a pair of Andromedas about 4 years old so not the 2020s..... I like them alot but periodically wonder if there is something that much better out there for under 2k.... Do the Senns or MESTs MkIIs blow these away or is it as I suspect incremental. If I had to fault anything on the Andros to my taste the soundstage isnt that big.... but that could just be IEMs in general. My big cans are HE-Xs as a point of reference.... and their stage is huge in comparison. Thanks for any thoughts.

While I haven't heard the Andromedas... My opinion is that pretty much everything is incremental, especially at the price point of the Andromeda. Most will come down to tuning and personal preference. There's a huge amount of hyperbole (by necessity) in this hobby.

Have you heard any dynamic driver IEMs? I agree with @mashuto that past a certain point it becomes more about tuning and incremental technical improvements, but there are unique physical differences to the sound between BAs and DDs. Might be worth trying an IEM with different driver types. As for stage size, headphones will always present differently, but you can get IEMs that allow you to perceive a much larger stage than Andromeda: U12t, Z1R, Tia Fourte, Traillii, to name a few. In IEMs, a 'large' perceived stage is often what you're paying alot of extra money for.
