Fostex TH900, Fostex TH610, Audeze LCD2, MrSpeakers Ether, Audioquest Nighthawk, Hifiman 400i, Beyerdynamic 770 80ohm, Sennheiser HD650, and a few from when I first started that I really need to get rid of. I have two more that I'm waiting on, ZMF Ori and Kennerton Vali from the Massdrop a week or so ago. I'm quite sure my rankings will change when those arrive.

You think the 770s are better than the 650s?

For my personal taste, yes. When I first started getting into this hobby, I read how great the Sennheisers were for the price. I first bought the 558s, and actually still like them even though I hardly ever break them out anymore. Moved up to the 598s and enjoyed them at the time, not as much now even though I admit they're great for beginners and still some of the most comfortable cans I've worn. Next I got the 650s. And I have to admit I just don't get it. I just find them boring. I admit I prefer lively headphones, with a touch of emphasis on the bass. Not head cannons, but not much into neutrality either. And when I've found neutral cans I do enjoy, they tend to be very open like the Ethers. So it's not really a "I think they suck" thing, it's a "they just aren't my thing" thing. No offense meant to any 650 lovers out there.

I don't own the 650s myself, I just found it very interesting knowing their reputation. How would you describe the 400i sound signature then?

I'll start with this. If you can get them on sale like I did for around $260, they're well worth it. I wouldn't buy them at the full price though. They're very wide open. Fairly neutral. The main trouble spot I've found with them is the mids can get congested sounding on some music. I listen to a lot of prog rock, and there can be a lot going on musically at any given time. That is when they run into trouble. That said, for say acoustic, classical, jazz, they're pretty great. Most classic rock is nice through them too. They're easy to drive in my experience. But if you put a lot of power to them they can generally handle it very well. The pads are a little uncomfortable. Other than that I find them to be decent comfort wise. I know some have had build quality issues with them but I haven't so far. Hope that helps.
