A good endorsement of the "play it soft" test for flatness.

I play my orthos soft because otherwise things start ringing (probably resonances due to the backs of the cups) and my eardrums start feeling like they're being jabbed, with certain notes.

Wouldn't that indicate a smiley-face frequency response?

Heh, its because you like headphones with crazy amounts of treble right

.
One thing I love about orthos (mainyl yamahas) is that unless u overdamp they have smooth trebles, and you can crank the volume and it just gets better heh. And still sounds good with lower volume.

I think it indicates some sharp peaks in the upper midrange/lower treble. It's more of an issue on the T20v2 (no reflex dot in there, currently). I doubt there is too much bass on either my T20v2 or T40 although both are currently slightly woolly/underdamped. Both roll off slightly in the top end, as well (16kHz+). Their presentations are definitely very different, with the T20v2 being forward and the T40 being laid back, which is not just the issue of driver distance from the ears.

I just like my treble present, well-extended, and smooth. Is that too much to ask?

I aint tried the new T50rp yet, but I think youd enjoy the old T50 driver headphones (at least in my experience of how the Aiwa and V2 sound when critically damped). And quite possibly the ID2...

But I guess thats why your a Stat fan...

Want to let me know when the next T50 clone or ID2 shows up?

I usually like being able to hear up to 20 or so kHz, but it definitely does make choosing headphones a problem, since most just can't seem to handle going there without rolling off and/or having uneven frequency response somewhere along the line. I guess this is where electrostatics come in.

I should try a proper sweep one day, but I doubt my hearing is flat up to 20khz heh. So maybe my reccomendations arent suitable

SFI in my QP55x? Heck no! I was using my YH-100 drivers! It sounded great, but I gave my QP55x to my girlfriend since she was looking for some full sized open cans.

The YH-100 is back to normal, but I'm currently working on a black walnut enclosure. Angled drivers, with radiators.

Oh, my bad. Faulty memory... Do you think an SFI has enough balls or does the QP55x need something big like a YH-100 driver to sound good?

And good luck on the wooden housing. I technically have the means but neither the time nor patience to construct something halfway decent with wood. Otherwise I'd be on my 4070-esque Lambda already.

I'm pretty sure the SFI isn't enough to really work in an open system. It just doesn't have enough surface area or excursion IMO.

And I'm making a wooden housing on 12 dollars. It's a lot cheaper than you think. If you spend more time, you can spend less money. I mean I'm making the thing with hand tools + dremel after all.

Oh, it's not about cost. I'm in pretty much the same situation as you. Something like table saw, router, dremel, handheld sander, some other tools, and a block of wood would be what I have to work with. As I said, I just don't have the time or patience.

And I did make that AT-702 SFI hybrid that is fully open but with a fairly small cup volume that sounds decent, but still is bass light because the pads are currently just open cell foam and I need to buy some leather or something to replace it. I tamed the top end by covering half of almost every hole on the front side of the drivers with weatherstrip. The QP55x seems like a harder 'phone to get right with the dinky little SFI drivers.

oh my, a NOS Fostex T20v1 ? wow...

btw i had succeed move SFI 32ohm to small closedback fosterfone, about 40mm cup...yes cup, the baffle re' about 42-44mm...smaller than ATH-2, bigger than Px100/200 offcourse...foldable and using velour pads, i'll add some pict later...great separation, well balance sound...sparkling but smooth treble, good mid, tight&fast bass (enough quantity for NON basshead) and still descent direct from ipod shuffle...next project, move my SFI 120ohm to smaller fosterfone...wish me luck, guys...

Less dense pieces of felt right next to the driver seem to cure that peak. Not that hath it completely disappeared, but it's significantly better now.

They just scream: "dampen me".

I'm still not sure about reflex dots, but dampening is a must.
