Looks like the debate as to whether the pads were pleather covered or not has been resolved though.

Ha. Yes, as you see it did

Pretty sure it's 12 microns, but consider that I don't know right off exactly where to find "proof" of that.

Keep us up on the continuing Grundig Adventure.

Right... just like most Yamahas then. The Hosiden specification says 12 microns, but we don't know for sure what driver it has.

Hmm I think I have some SR-X pads in Smeggy's cave.....does anyone know if they have a similar inner hole size?
Are SR-X pads comfy?

The YH-1000 struts are removable and replaceable, so the real solution is to extract the good one and find a machinist who can manufacture you a replacement or five out of a nice 7000 series alloy.

It'll be expensive. Around here the machinists charge $65/hr and i hear that's low.

Hmm yes its a smart solution, but too expensive for the moment... I'll have to come up with something else.

The SR-X pads have a 33mm center hole and comfort is ok for that design. They have worked well for me as replacement pads on sets like the Aurex HR-1000 so they would be a good option for the YH-1000.

Good photos, Don. Any possibility we'd see the baffle-side differences you mentioned in a head-on photo?

Images added to original post

You will see that the Wharfedale has a rubber foam gasket and has a much denser grid ( for some anterior damping ) while the Leak has that excuse of a foam oval and much less anterior damping. Curious thing is that I cannot get the Wharfedale baffle to fit on the Leak even though the remainder of the cups look identical (down to the same grainy plastic ) - they were obviously manufactured at similar times but there were definitely some in-house differences including the plates used for the magnets ( as noted previously ) - I really don't want to open the assembly to get a good look at the membranes but they look the same through the slots.

I think the sound variance I am hearing all comes down to the baffle - the wharfedale seals and keeps the backwave in check while damping the front wave ( even smeggy has discovered the benefit of this ) - they are less forward sounding and have deeper bass. The Leak have less bass but have much more on the top end , both are fast as hell and sound good without any mods. (this doesn't mean I didn't mod them

So are both drivers in working order? If so, then I know Team Ortho can collectively get Kabeer a setup that will house them in worthy fashion, and dare I say it; looking better than the original!

Brass, a set of cheap Chinese-made needle files, lots of time and patience? :P

That would work, just will take a long time. Might work better with copper as it softer

the simplest solution would probably be fixing the old strut with a thin nail and some epoxy.
it might not be the prettiest solution, but it sould be quite strong, and looks probably wont matter anyway, as its mostly hidden by the headband.

you could always replace it with something beautiful once you become rich from gambling

I am a happy man. I just received my first pair of factory made orthos. My franken SFI's are interesting but not well executed. I now have what is quite clearly a bass heavy version of the YH-3. They sound good. Full stop. Very involving cans. Hard to take off my head once I get into something...same thing happens to me with my MP Sextetts oddly enough.

edit: I can't compare these with another pair so I'm just assuming they are the bass heavy version because they do have noticeable bass. It isn't earthshaking though. Nor does it seem to muddy things up or be out of control...which makes me wonder. I AM a bass head -- as long as it is quality bass that comes packaged with sweet mids. I have found Ludoo's mod guide. I don't want less bass. If I were to tinker with these what should I be considering?
