[GUIDE] Sonic Differences Between DT770-DT990 Models & More

The stx on high gain would run the 600ohm version just fine. I ran the dt770 and the dt990/600 version and they both sounded very nice.

So just got my DT 770 250s, I have just been laughing for the past 30 min listening to music. This is seriously mind blowing what these sound like (I haven't been exposed to audiophile stuff in large) so compared to what I used before (ATH m50 which were horrible sounding, and over recommended to people, to Ultrasone dj1 pro, all the way to the HD555) these cans are f0cking smoking right now. Im running them unamped through reg pc sound card...sound fantastic and loud enough. It shreds horrible kbs sounding music like no other, and I can finally tell the difference in sound quality. Still might consider an e7 or something else, but wow, awesome headphones.

I just wanted again to say thanxs for the review zombie! helped me a lot

Asus Xonar DG (PCI) sound card, only $27 and there is a $10 mail in rebate this month.
Half-way decent headphone amplifier and comes with Dolby Digital (Dolby Virtual Headphone, surround sound).

Thanks for taking the time to do this amazing review.  This was one of the main resources that lead to picking up the DT990 pros this week.  Can't wait for them to arrive!

For metal I actually preferred the DT770 Pro 80Ohm, as it had a "wall of sound" that seems to suit metal more. The mids also found a tad more forward and the bass was more plentiful. The DT990 Pro are also a really good option as they can give guitars that certain "bite" and the bass is more visceral. The only downside is that the DT990 has a dip in the mids.

If you have the amp for the 600Ohm versions then I'd say go with that. They are more rewarding than the 250Ohm versions when amped right!

How do you feel about this MLE?

Also guys I may have some goodies coming. Been looking to borrow another Head-Fiers DT150, said to be one of the best beyers out there!

EDIT: I added the DT250/80Ohm in the "other models" section. Check out my impressions of it.

Zombie, it's been too long since I heard the DT770 Pro 80. I think the DT990 Pro is a better headphone overall, BUT, it wasn't for me. The mid bass hit like a truck, whereas the DT770 Pro 80 was a bit more reserved in the mid bass, but incredibly bloated on the lowest bowels of bass. In the end, the DT770 Pro 80 was easier to listen to,but felt that the 990 pro was more mid tier, while the 770 Pro 80 was more beginner to mid tier.

Also, the DT990 Pro is noticeably faster in attack, so I felt it did rock better.

I know I say the 990 Pro is better, but if I had a choice, I'd go with the 770 pro 80, because I can actually listen to them without feeling like my head was getting punched in the ears. I'm just really sensitive to mid bass. I'm all for emphasized sub bass though (when it's done right, like in the D7000).

I don't think either headphone has good mids, but they are both clear for me, just distant. My main problem with the 770 pro 80 is that at times, it sounds quite muffled. Didn't really get that from the 990s.

Indeed, all versions of the DT770 tend to have a dip between 3-4 kHz, which is responsible for the somewhat muffled mids.

I am quite interested in them. I've only heard the DT100 and DT250. The DT150 is supposed to be a nice balance of neutrality and warmth.

Great review, still though I'm a little curious as to how well my Zune will drive the 600ohm variety seeing as I currently lack a good amp

Do you guys think an E17 could be sufficent to drive the 600 ohm version? As I don't want to miss out on quality due to lack of proper ampage [in addition I'd like not to be entirely tied down to my PC as it sux right now and I'm to be moving soon]

The Zune would not be a good choice at all. It lacks the voltage and the headphones will eat up it's battery fast.

As for the E17, I am not sure but it would probably do a better job than the Zune. How much better is unknown though, so maybe someone can help me out?
