To be honest, I usually reach for the La Figaro 336C with the fancy (but archaic) NOS tubes that I have in the 336C when I want to listen to my DT880s.
I like the colouration the tubes add to the DT880.
This combo really works for some of the old jazz and old Pink Floyd I like to listen to.
But the Matrix M Stage + DT880 combo works for me when I want more punch out of the bass and crunch out of electric guitars.
I can see why some people may not like the DT880s. They are not for everyone. I tend to flip back and forth between DT880/Q701s a lot.
Just my opinion but I really do not like the HD650s.
OTOH I have this massive itch to get a either a pair of Grados or a pair of DT990/600 ohm.
I must be a closet treble head.
