Actually, my dt770 did have the manufaktur leather pads.  I quite enjoyed them.   I don't see the DT770 leather available anywhere now.  Beyerdynamic only offers the aviation leather pads, which I'm told don't sound as good.  I have not tried the J$ pads.

If you're coming from K701 (which I actually liked - only having a PC360 to compare) with their bad comfort (I hated it) would you go for the DT 990 Premium 600 Ohm or DT 880 Premium 600 Ohm?

DT880 is the closest thing the Beyers have to the 701s.

Having recently bought a pair of dt770's for night listening to compiment my dt 880's which annoy the missus lying next to me. Got to say i agree with much of what is said.

Having said that i personally can not hear a difference between the different ohm ratings. I guess i'm just lucky my ears aren't trained to audiophile level! But i can definitely hear the diferences between the headphones.

Personaly i prefer the 880's neutrality, but i love the balance of the 770's. I'm not sure why but it sounds much deeper bass to me, though less controlled than the 880's.

Reading this just makes me want to add a 990 to have the three brothers. then get the t1 to be the annoying overacheiving baby brother

can't say i enjoyed listening to the t70 though it is the only beyer i have not enjoyed the sound of, i can't really pinpoint why but found them boring.

I had a chance to audition a pair of DT770 80 Ohm at a local shop and I was very pleasantly surprised. It is definitely a basshead headphone but also one of the most comfortable headphones I have ever had a chance to try.

DT880s sound rather bass heavy and midrange heavy when compared to the 701s.
Or you could say that the DT880s are somewhat more neutral than the 701s.

which exact model Beyers are you using?
What are you using to amplify your headphones?
The DT990 are like "movie theater" headphones, full bass & treble, which kind of overshadows the vocals, (but you can still hear the vocals).

Is it true that differences between 250 ohm and 600 ohm models at this time are smaller than before? I've seen someone say that 250 ohm versions got improved and are now more similar to 600 version, as well as old 250's being different than new 250's.... any experience with that?
 
Also, if I have HD650's and Q701's,  which one should I add to my collection, DT990 or DT880? Is the midrange recess on DT990 really very serious? Can it be EQ'ed effectively?

I don't know anything about the differences in sound between the 250 and 600 ohm versions so I won't say nothin'
My humble opinion..............
The DT880 is the most neutral and flat of the two. Nice and accurate.  More or less right between the HD650 and the Q701
The DT990 is a nice sounding headphone though........the midrange recess ain't that bad. The treble boost and bass boost in the DT990 can be very appealing for a lot of types of music.
I don't have any problem driving my 600 ohm DT880s with my Matrix M Stage. They not that hard to drive if you are using a headphone amp. 
 
Frankly, when I bought my DT880s I spent a fair amount of time comparing them to DT990s, it almost came down a coin toss!

People certainly do have the potential to hear things very differently.  I started out with the 880s and found them to be very dry and boring.  Stepping up to the 990s put the fun back into the music.  They are more alike than they are different, but the small differences made all the difference to me.

I think I'll go with DT990's...lots of people say they're fun to listen to, and since q701 and hd650 aren't really, i'll go for 990's. Or maybe the Denon D2000's.... damn choices.

To be honest, I usually reach for the La Figaro 336C with the fancy (but archaic) NOS tubes that I have in the 336C when I want to listen to my DT880s. 
I like the colouration the tubes add to the DT880.
This combo really works for some of the old jazz and old Pink Floyd I like to listen to.
But the Matrix M Stage + DT880 combo works for me when I want more punch out of the bass and crunch out of electric guitars.
I can see why some people may not like the DT880s. They are not for everyone. I tend to flip back and forth between DT880/Q701s a lot.

I listen to a lot of Pink Floyd.  The 880s absolutely killed their sound for me.  The 990s were a nice improvement.  However, the HD600s are absolutely perfect for Floyd.
