Hey I was wondering which headphone is the best for Bass, Noise Isolation and Comfort out of the Sennheiser HD 439 and the Audio Technica ATH-WS55?   I listen to dub step and like to blast my music without anyone else hearing. Help?

The HD439 has what I would say is neutral bass and i don't think they have very good isolation (I'm not too sure how much isolation, as I no longer have HD439s in my possession), but have brilliant comfort as they have velour ear pads. From what I've heard from/about the WS55 (I've demoed them a few times), it also has fairly neutral bass (perhaps a touch more), and will have better isolation as it uses pleather ear pads and is on ear, but won't beat the HD439 in comfort.

A friend of mine is wanting to get some new headphones. He asked me for some help, so I thought that I would come here to get some advice. They will be played from his computer/iphone, so they need to be easily driven. He said they'd be mostly for home use.
He wants:
Closed headphones that isolate well (passive)
Over the ear
Comfortable
Under $200 US

Mainly listens rock, ska, and metal (nothing that extreme). Some of his favorite bands are Pink Floyd, System of a Down, and The Greatful Dead.

What would you guys recommend? So far, I've looked into the KRK KNS 8400, AKG K 272 HD (They're under 200 on Amazon), and the Audio Technica A900, but I haven't listen to any of them so I don't know which would be best.

Thanks.

I'm looking for a set of headphones in the 100-120USD range. I've looked at the AT AD700's and Grado SR60/80. However I am not sure which one is right for me.. I listen to all types of music, and I'm looking for something extremely comfortable. I don't want to have the earpads heat up quickly and also I don't want a strong clamping force on my head. I will like a nice sound stage but its not a must. Will be used for music and gaming at home. I tried the SR80's @ my friends at the were quite comfortable for me, but they don't seem to have a nice sound stage...is that correct? Also on Inner-Fidelity's website they talk about the Sennheiser HD239...do they compete?

Thanks :)

There are some nice things to be said about the ATH-AD700, but their light bass is a turn off.

Assuming that power-wise your phone is similar to an iPhone 4, you need something easy to drive unless buy and use an amp.  Further assuming that you will use your phone unamped palying MP3 quality audio and that open is OK with you since you referenced the open HD 558, you should check the buying guides linked in the opening post of this thread.  Look for cans rated "1" to be assured they will play from a phone.

Consider the Alessandro MS1, Ultrasone HiFi 780, Shure SRH 840 (this one many not play loud but should play loud enough), KRK KNS-6400, Sony MDR-7510, Grado SR225i--all of which I pick for sound quality and characteristics over the M50.  The HD 598 is a very good can and is over your budget based on US prices.  Beyond that it may or may not play with suffient volume out of your phone.

Thanks mate, much appreciated.  I ended up going for the SRH840 (and all my music is FLAC).

Thanks again :)

Looks good, comfortable and sounds good. I think these will also meet your criteria.

Edit:
Sorry, didn't see full-sized at first. You could wait for the M-100, which are the big brothers of the M-80. They are expected to come out next month. Also, the V-MODA LP2.

Can anyone recommend me a pair of closed headphones for travel and home use around 100~ (no more than 110).

I've been looking up some headphones as this will be my first full sized headphones purchase (usually stick to IEM's), and I like the Creative  Aurvana Live! headphones. I listen to a wide array of genres (rock, metal, hip-hop, alternative, blues, reggae etc.) but I really do like my bass.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

This is the full size headphone section of the forum.  There is another section that addresses IEM's and portable cans--that's where you need to post this request.

The CAL! are good but expensive these days.  However, still within your budget.

Also check out the Sony MDRZX700, Shure SRH 440 and KRK KNS-6400.
