The HD439 has what I would say is neutral bass and i don't think they have very good isolation (I'm not too sure how much isolation, as I no longer have HD439s in my possession), but have brilliant comfort as they have velour ear pads. From what I've heard from/about the WS55 (I've demoed them a few times), it also has fairly neutral bass (perhaps a touch more), and will have better isolation as it uses pleather ear pads and is on ear, but won't beat the HD439 in comfort.

A friend of mine is wanting to get some new headphones. He asked me for some help, so I thought that I would come here to get some advice. They will be played from his computer/iphone, so they need to be easily driven. He said they'd be mostly for home use.
He wants:
Closed headphones that isolate well (passive)
Over the ear
Comfortable
Under $200 US
 
Mainly listens rock, ska, and metal (nothing that extreme). Some of his favorite bands are Pink Floyd, System of a Down, and The Greatful Dead.
 
What would you guys recommend? So far, I've looked into the KRK KNS 8400, AKG K 272 HD (They're under 200 on Amazon), and the Audio Technica A900, but I haven't listen to any of them so I don't know which would be best.

There are some nice things to be said about the ATH-AD700, but their light bass is a turn off.

Consider the Alessandro MS1, Ultrasone HiFi 780, Shure SRH 840 (this one many not play loud but should play loud enough), KRK KNS-6400, Sony MDR-7510, Grado SR225i--all of which I pick for sound quality and characteristics over the M50.  The HD 598 is a very good can and is over your budget based on US prices.  Beyond that it may or may not play with suffient volume out of your phone.

won't be getting an amp and i'll mostly be listening to v0 mp3s off of my laptop/zune

Can anyone recommend me a pair of closed headphones for travel and home use around 100~ (no more than 110). 
 
I've been looking up some headphones as this will be my first full sized headphones purchase (usually stick to IEM's), and I like the Creative  Aurvana Live! headphones. I listen to a wide array of genres (rock, metal, hip-hop, alternative, blues, reggae etc.) but I really do like my bass.
 
Any recommendations? Thanks.

The CAL! are good but expensive these days.  However, still within your budget.
 
Also check out the Sony MDRZX700, Shure SRH 440 and KRK KNS-6400.
