I just recently purchased both to see which one I liked. I ended up keeping the 780s, better detail at every level. I listen to mostly hip hop and rock too...If you already have the M50s and are looking to upgrade I'd say go for something better than the 780s though, but that's just me. Maybe something like the D2000 if you have the budget?

Look into the Audio Technica ATH-M50s. They sound like they might fit the bill for what you're looking for; worth investigating, anyway. There should be plenty of threads around about them, just give 'em a search up top.

I have never heard the K181DJ, but I can tell you the ATH-M50s are definitely worth the price.

I found the AKG's bass muddy and bloated. The M50 is more refined and is also built like a tank. I'd recommend the AT but wouldn't pay more than $120 for it.

Yeah, the difference from ANC is pretty noticeable, and jacks up the price a lot. Well-isolating closed cans can do just as well. Some options would be the M50s, HFI780/580s, M80s, HD25s, etc. Maybe the P5s if you like their looks and usability, though sound quality is a little underwhelming for the price.

Ok, makes sense. Unfortunately, I can't help too much with that comparison. I can tell you however, that open cans will not be able to deliver thumping bass.

They're pretty similar, and I think it can come down to personal preference. i'd recommend waiting to upgrade outright or get a pair with a different sound signature to complement them.

What I found:
I am looking for maximum portability,and decent isolation. as I am already very used to IEM's. Having a removable cable is a must.
 
M-Audio Q40- Seems to be what I need, bassy sound sig, removable cable,  cups seem to large for portable use, however.
XB500/700 - Lack of removable cable. I really don't need THIS much bass. Treble seems much to recessed. Much too bulky. 
ATH-M50 - Too Neutral/ Boring Sounding. Lack of removable cable.
K181DJ- Don't know too many people that were actually impressed by these. Not interested.
HFi-580/780 - Lack of removable (10 foot!! ) cable. 
V-Moda M-80 - Too Neutral, lack of decent isolation. Over- Budget.
V-Moda LP - Nice bass depth, could be a decent value at $100.
Pro700Mk.2 - The one I am the most interested in. Deep bass and removable cable while still being portable. The small amount of reviews talk about comfort problems, however. 
 
 
Besides these, any other reccomendations? If not, I think I will go for the pro700, or if my budget randomly cuts, the LP. 
 
 
 

So your top choices seem to be the M-Audios and Pro700s? Between them, I don't think there's a big size difference, and if anything the Q40s are smaller. Also, l don't think you'll be happy with the Crossfades, as the original version tends to be muddy. Otherwise, your assessments seem pretty solid.

Both the ZX700 and CAL!s are solid pairs. From what I understand, the CAL!s might be a bit more bass-oriented than the ZX700s, i that makes a difference. One third choice could be the Koss DJ100s.

M50, HFI780/580 are all around $150 and fit the sound preferences, but none have detachable cables. HM5 and SRH840 have that, but are more neutral and might not work for dubstep, etc.

I think the M50 is agreed to sound better, but the AKGs have a different form factor and are a lot cheaper atm. I don't know that they're worth $70 more tbh. Maybe search for a lower price or look into Ultrasones? The M50s are more comfortable, but build is comparable.

Denon D2000? Not a whole lot of stuff in that range is terrible forgiving IMO.
