Similar to DT880 but slightly less extension both ends, but much better mids = HD600.  You lose a tiny bit of detail but gain better balance and much better imagery IMO.
 
Still detailed with a nice soundstage - but just a really great tone.  I had both - DT880 250 ohm and the HD600.  Kept the HD600 - haven't regretted it.  Is more of a move sideways than upgrade (slightly different tone overall) - but the money you save could go towards a nice amp or amp/dac if you don't have one.

The HD5xx series will be good. Well balanced, relatively easy to drive, good staging.

Best isolation and punch would probably be the Ultrasone. Denon has the smoothest feel and great bass extension, but lousy isolation and not the greatest build quality. I haven't heard the XB1000 although I seem to recall reading some reviews that like the XB700 more.
 
If I had to pick, I'd go with the Pro900. Plenty of mod potential in the Ultrasones as well.

The Senn is the easy choice. The Beyer is just all bass and doesn't have a very good soundstage.

My understanding is that a good soundstage is required for effective gaming.
 
5. Portable
Not a huge deal for me. I usually go out with some sort of bag. If worse comes to worst, I'll just wear them around my neck. But it'd be nice.
 
Misc.
- My music will be coming from my phone, Samsung Galaxy S Captivate
- I have a Fiio E5 ordered (but I got it from dealextream and I don't know if they're reliable)
- My computer sound card is the Auzentech Bravura and I've noticed after getting said card, my gear has become the new bottleneck 
Being the newb that I am, I don't really know where to look. I'm much more familiar with computers and until I get to that sort of familiarity with headphones, I'd like to deploy the help of the wonderful people here at Head-Fi. I looked into some of the more famous cans and I definately know to stay away from marketing gimmicks (though I have owned a set of Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket IEM's in highschool and I remember they weren't that bad... given that I had to jam them into my ears for the sound I wanted lol).
 
The ATH-A700 don't seem to fit my need and have a reputation of being bass light (can this be solved by the E5?). The ATH-M50 seems to be too heavy on bass and has a terrible soundstage according to the gaming guide on this forum. ATH-AD700's are open. It seems everything in this price range is missing 1 thing. I want to start simple and see (hear) a slow progression as I gain knowledge about headphones and audio in general.

Music: It ranges, from "brostep" to metal, from rap to classical, from Screamo to Orchestral. See where I'm going with this?

They would be for portable use as well, but when that happens they would probably just be on my neck. I don't have an amp, and if I do get one it's going to be a portable one. Probably a cheaper one at first like the fiio e6 or something. I listen to Rap, HipHop, Rock (Rise Against, Foo Fighters, Bad Religion, etc) Metal. Isolation is preferred, but not completely necessary

Had some time to try 3 headphones which was suggested (Beyers dt770, shure srh 940 and Senn hd598) The headphones i currently own (shure srh440) and now considering an upgrade.
From the 3 headphones i tried, I like the SRH940's comfort most but somehow the sound seems laid back to me (maybe it was not burnt in or need a portable amp?). The Beyers dt770 had too much bass for me (but dislike the circumaural cup shape and the vocal separation is not on par with SRH940, tried with music which has 3 vocals playing at the same time) and finally I found out I dislike open back headphones so Senn HD 598 is not for me.
 
Maybe I'm too used to the sound of Shure SRH440? The Shure SRH940 is no where near to SRH440's sound signature (need to audition it again next time.....). I listen to mostly J-pop and will use it to watch movies. Is there any headphones which has good female vocal (forward), comfort wise like the SRH940 (velour pads will do!), smaller bass than the DT770, better vocal and instrument separation. Somehow a better upgrade from SRH440 will do. Thanks!

Of the headphones listed, the M50 would be most suitable. The Beyers are really too bulky to be portable, and need an amp anyways. Same goes for the AKG actually.

Did you try the Shure 840? More bass than the 440, but not as much as the 770. Comfort will be similar to the 940, but it has pleather pads, although you can always order pads separately.

Although I do still want to head out and listen to a bunch before I take the plunge, after that ill make my decision. Still open to other choices if anyone wants to tell me some. Always open to looking at them

If you get a chance, I would suggest you try out the Sennheiser HD598.  It is really a good all arounder.
