Got 3 questions I need help on:

1) Is a 2nd hand HD598 at $160 a good deal assuming that the local price is around $280?

2) Has anyone ship headphones from a Japan company internationally? The price of the AD900X is really tempting at around $220 everything included as they claim. It is safe and will there be any more duty, taxes, other charges unseen?

3) How would the hd600, ad900x, and hd598 compare to each other and the he-400 since I have them and do no want another headphone that is too similiar.

Thanks a lot!

To add on the 2nd question I meant a 3rd party company in Japan selling in Amazon.

Here are the links to the Amazon web pages. Scroll down and the details of the AD900X is shown below on the pages.
Thanks

After using IEMs for years, I've decided to try out a full-size headphone.
It will be used for both music (rock and its sub-genres mostly) and gaming.
Budget is 200$.
I'll also buy an amp soon, most likely a Fiio e07k Andes and use it as an external soundcard.
Are the DT860s a good choice? They are exactly 200$. I know the 880s are more popular/better but they cost 310$ here. And I can't spend more cause I have to buy the Fiio :p Can't afford monsters like the HD650s, haha.
Best 'phone I've heard so far is the Audeo PFE112 if that helps.
I might also use them with a Clip+, dunno if I want to take them outside yet.

Yes--that's you known (by me) weak link in the chain (although I don't know the format of your music and through what you play it).

Portable or desktop amp?

Can't help with the DAC, as I don't need a stand alone DAC for my vinyl, CD's & SACD's.

desktop

HiFiMan EF5 (hybrid) or Schiit Asgard 2 (solid state).  I'm sure there are others.

In addition the $500 price range is more or less a dead zone for new closed cans.

W1000X

It can be had for well below $500.  Further, it does not hold up well against the best $300 to $500 open and semi-open cans.

The old Denon D's are missed.

Speaking as an owner of the ATH-W1000X and AH-D7000, as well as several great open headphones in the price range, I highly doubt you've given the W1000X a fair listen with a remark that flippant and nonspecific.

In any case, I completely disagree.

Hi everybody, having some second thoughts about buying myself a new pair of headphones

I've been saving money for some time and decided to buy sennheiser HD 518 at first but given how I never got to test any of the more expensive headphones, I have to say I'm a little bit scared I won't get what I want or there might be headphones better suited for what I'm listening to and there isn't too much options to try variety of headphones in my country before buying.

budget: same as sennheiser hd 518, its about 150 euros in my country

type of music: I do not prefer specific type, I listen to jazz, alternative rock, rnb, hip hop, electronic(especially enjoying flying lotus, burial etc.) and other stuff too

here's my last fm for better check maybe http://www.last.fm/user/franko-bananko

so I have two questions for help - 1. I'm a little bit scared how powerful or better to say overhelming the bass is because I do enjoy clarity, would like some nice soundstage and clear mids and highs not to be overshadowed by bass cuz bass is not the most important thing for me, overall sound quality is( although some bass impact is desireable).

2. some other headphones to check out because personally I get lost reading about all these headphones on internet , still new to this stuff

and sorry for my english, hope its understandable. Would appreciate any kind of advice but I'm fine if there is no right answer for me

thanks in advance

My guess is that you don't understand that the HD 518 is Senn's entry level product for their lowest level of entry line audiophile cans.  While they are dark--darker than the next up the line, HD 558, they are not bass heavy cans in any respect.

I suggest that you read some reviews about them, as well as their bigger brothers the HD 558 and HD 598.  You should be the gist of their sound signature and how the other two cans in this line differ.

For other cans check out the buying guides linked in the opening post of this thread.

Speaking as an owner of the ATH-W1000X and AH-D7000, as well as several great open headphones in the price range, I highly doubt you've given the W1000X a fair listen with a remark that flippant and nonspecific.

I not only have listened to them, but own them.  Along with the D7000, D5000 and D2000.  The first two are clearly superior to the W1000X and the D2000 a bit better (and quite different) than the W1000X--at least to my ears.  The last two are on Tyll's Wall of Fame (now retired).  Tyll rates the W1000X a level below that.

I find the open and semi-open DT 880, Q 701, HD 600, HD 650, Grado RS 2i, Grado SR 325is, Alessandro MS-2i, and Sony MDR-SA5000 (by ways of example) all to be clearly superior to the W1000X.  It lacks the clarity and detail offered by all these cans.  I hear the AD 900 and HD 598 to be very close, if not superior to it--depending on personal sound signature preferences.

So the record is clear--I like the W1000X, but there are/have been better choices for the money and/or in its general price range.

Then to provide a counterpoint - I feel the W1000X is clearly superior to the DT 880/250, Q701 and HD 650. I find it competitive with the AH-D7000 (I do not have the D5000 or D2000 to compare) in terms of resolution and detail, trading sub-bass response for greater mid-bass and having a far less recessed midrange. The individual I sold my W1000X to alleged it was competitive with his Beyerdynamic T90.

I think the make-or-break factor for the W1000X is in its decay, and that's probably not going for you.

We know that Tyll's wall of fame is predicated on his perceptions of value and his own tastes (which tend away from energetic sound signatures like that espoused by the W1000X). This is why the D7000 did not make it on the value proposition, nevermind the W1000X being more expensive at the time of his review. In fact if you read Tyll's content instead of just the rating, he thought the W1000X and D5000 were comparable.

I find it laughable the Denons are still mentioned as closed recommendations when even my DT880s provide superior isolation.

New here, new to higher end audio in general. Apologies in advance for any rules and conventions I might break...

Looking for advice choosing between two options that would fit my budget.
1. Pricier cans (e.g., LCD2) with cheaper DAC and amp (e.g., Schitt Modi and Magni)
2. Less expensive cans (e.g., HE400) and more expensive DAC and amp (brand/model tbd)

I guess an option in between too, but not familiar with what items would fit the bill.

Potentially useful info:
- source always computer, unfortunately a lot of compressed stuff (320 Kbps mp3 and AAC); CDs; looking forward to FLAC-ing moving forward
- would probably be locked into what I buy for 1-2 years before adding anything new
- listen to many genres

Thanks in advance to anyone with an opinion to share.

I've kept the AD900X in favor to the HE400 and HD598 if that helps at all.

I'm really curious to know what people here think of the sr80i vs sr60i. Is there really no difference if you use L pads for them?

I want to have another pair of headphones so I can compare the sound to my AKG K240 headphones. I hear the sound is pretty bright, and I listen to mostly rock music which these are supposed to be good for. I can't tell if I should get the sr80i or the sr60i.

I've done some research and I can't seem to find any concise statements saying one is better than the other. Some say there's no difference and some say the bass on one is better than the other. If I could know that the sr60i is the same as the sr80i with the L pad I would love to know so I can save 20 bucks and get the sr60 or get the sr80i.

Get the Alessandro MS-1i.

Failing that your are just likely to get more back and forth, much like the HD 600 vs. HD 650 discussions.  Put each on your own ears.

If it helps, I like them (but like the HD 558 & 598 more) and I do not like bass heavy cans.
