I eventually got the velour pads from him. It is a little difficult to do. Furthermore, the pads are next to impossible to get on to the K340. Once they're on though, they've been really comfy, so I'm keeping them.

Playing in the lab, the difference in resistance/inductance/capacitance between soldered connections and most attachment/plug-like connections is negligible. I would only hardwire if you see a benefit in durability and have no intention of changing the cable.

I noticed the biggest improvement when upgrading my source. That said, upgrading the amp also did produce a noticeable improvement with the AD2000. A warm amp can really fill out the bass nicely and naturally.

I originally found the lower midrange and bass lacking, but with a tube setup, it fills out really nicely.

I used both the hd280 and Shure e4c at one point in time (the hd280 were a gift). Initially I liked the 280s better, but the e4c are decisively clearer and more detailed, with greater extension down low though less impact. Honestly, I was unimpressed with both headphones, though...

I don't believe I will keep both pairs...the HD600 only marginally does orchestras better, and that really is frankly a matter of taste. I can live with the AD2000s and will look elsewhere to try other headphones.
