On October 15, Audio-Technica announced the release of its latest wooden headphone, the W1000X. This 10th generation W series headphone uses a black cherry housing that encapsulates a newly developed 53mm driver. A newly designed 3D wing support headband is also implemented. The ATH-W1000X "Grandioso" will be available in Japan on November 13 for the retail price of ¥71400, or $789.83 in today's US dollar.

Just when I brought some limited ATs, a new contester appeared and in the same price range...

Nice...
Although I would really like them to return to the more subtle and natural wood finish that was used on the W100 or maybe the W5000.
Too much gloss and 'hey look at me, I'm special' in the looks of the new cans, without quite nailing it imho.

I'm gonna see if my distributor will sell me some W1000 cheaply since it's been discontinued.

I wonder if there will be somewhere that I can try a pair here locally. The local electronics stores are funny about demo headphones, at least in my city.

Nice looking phones. I like the gloss finish. A nice gloss finish really brings out the depth and highlights of the grain in wood. This wood doesn't seem to have a lot of contrasting grain but it's still a nice finish.

BTW kjk1281, I love your avatar. I played DQVIII on my PS2 obsesively for a while.

EDIT: I just noticed the lip around the rim of the cups. Not sure why AT went with that design. It looks like it'd be really easy to damage the finish on that lip.

except for the L3000, all the woody ATH's sound about the same to me, which is average to slightly above - but i'm not really interested in owning any of them.
