What makes you think it's due to the upsampling? My guess is it's probably just a difference in quality between your soundcard's DAC and your upsampling one, but without knowing what DAC and soundcard you're talking about, I can't really back that up.

You should try plugging your phones into the rear line-out sometime. IMO it sounds a fair bit better than the front panel headphone jack.

I know what you mean. I have the ProMedia 2.1s, and I really liked them prior to buying my HD595s. It's been about a month since I bought them, and I've only used the ProMedias once. They sound horrible by comparison.
