Why is that a upsampling DAC would make instruments sound less jumbled and more separated? That is the difference I notice between my soundcard and my upsampling DAC.

What makes you think it's due to the upsampling? My guess is it's probably just a difference in quality between your soundcard's DAC and your upsampling one, but without knowing what DAC and soundcard you're talking about, I can't really back that up.

Uh Oh! Sorting this out is not going to be easy. I'll just have to try different DACs until I get the sound I like.
