E-MU 0204 USB: Damn, They've Done it Again! And for $129!!!
I have the same question. It seems that the 0204 DAC chip's specs are better, and it supports more sample rates than the uDAC2, but there's more to a DAC than just the chip.- Stephen_Ri

Need DAC, have DT880+LD MKIII
Don't see any reason to go with a sound card and a dac, when you can get a USB dac that will do everything the combination could, for less money. If the X-FI offers a great improvement for gaming, I am unaware of it. The udac-2 you mentioned seems the best option, waiting to pull the trigger on...- Stephen_Ri

Which Box Set Has Been The Biggest Rip-off?
Are there any Velvet Underground or Nick Drake boxsets? I suppose those are the only artists whose catalogs number three or more that I actually like. I would buy the beatles mono box, but with others above, I agree that it's simply too expensive. Also, I think some members of the forum are...- Stephen_Ri

What will Pitchfork choose as their #1 album of this decade?
As has been suggested already in the case of torrents, I suspect that their relevance might be tested by record sales. Several studies have been done of the "pitchfork effect" and it has been found that record stores notice that a pitchfork endorsement can have a tremendous effect upon sales...- Stephen_Ri

What will Pitchfork choose as their #1 album of this decade?
On the top records of the decade: I imagine that it'll look like this: 1. Funeral 2. Kid A 3. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Silent Shout may be in the top three, and although Sound of Silver has two of the very best songs of the decade, it will probably not make it as an album. The above selections...- Stephen_Ri

Modifying the Xiang Sheng 708B [56K!!!!]
For several months now I've had to apply leftward pressure to the the end of my headphone cord while it is plugged into the 708B in order to hear the left channel. The problem is not with my cord. Recently, the left channel has stopped working entirely. Any suggestions? How difficult is...- Stephen_Ri

Recommend new indie/folkrock like..
Be sure to pick up the Fleet Foxes' EP, which has material as strong as the album's. There is nothing out there quite like the ***; that's why they're so popular. Neutral Milk Hotel is receiving lots of recs, is probably even better than but is nothing like FF. They were/are both on an indie...- Stephen_Ri

The La's ... now that's a classic slice of brit-pop!
While I think "There She Goes" to be one of the best pop songs ever recorded, and "Timeless Melody" to be almost as good, half of the The La's is quite weak. But the other half surely worth the price of the album.- Stephen_Ri

Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, 10 years later
Great album. On Avery Island is better, I think. "Song about Sex" or something may be his best.- Stephen_Ri

We Were You Once, You Know-- The Brit Box (Rhino)
Yes, it's a fine compilation. I cannot imagine a singly more enjoyable disc than the first(of four). Really, I hardly play the others. Maybe I just haven't given them the proper time. Also check out other Rhino box sets, Left of the Dial (80s underground) and No Thanks(punk). A Life Less...- Stephen_Ri

Grunge Music Revisited
The only album which survives my grunge phase (besides those by Nirvana, which are not really grunge, as one clever writer at Pitchfork pointed out) is Pearl Jam's official boot 6/16/00 at Katowice, Poland. Good, intimate songs, along with an overview of their better stuff all the way back to Ten.- Stephen_Ri

Head-Fi destroys my listening experience!
Join the Head-Fi Stoics. The position is essentially this: invest in a system that will not be the limiting factor in the prestentation of the music that reaches your ear. That some recordings are less than ideal is quite beyond your control, so take satisfaction in the knowledge that you hear...- Stephen_Ri

Do you think, 20 years from now...
While there will probably be little nostalgia for MP3 itself, the MP3 sound which people who listen to low bitrate recordings (including the sort that iTunes continues to propagate) have become accustomed to may have some attraction. It's the way the album sounded to them for a particular (and...- Stephen_Ri

Rant: Digital Remastering [PICS]
I'm not sure if I'm more bothered by the awful remasters (and original releases) or the unceasing discussions about them. Maybe there should be an audio compression rant sub-forum, because half of what is said here is not about music, it is about music presentation, which is what the headphone...- Stephen_Ri

Headphone Amp for Beyerdynamic DT 880 (2005 edition)
I too was hesitant about tubes becaue of the maintenance factor. I bought a Headroom Home, which is a great amp--build quality could be no better--but it just plain did not sound right with the DT-880s. Too bright. Now I'm using the XianSheng 708b, enjoying a full, natural sound. Tubes are...- Stephen_Ri

Joshua Tree [2007 Remastered]
A fine remaster. Significantly less muddled than the previous CD. Fairly dynamic. The consensus (if there can be such a thing among audio enthusiasts) is that this highly-produced record will never sound stellar. This release is surpristingly good, I think. I have not heard the second disk of...- Stephen_Ri

Help--Crackling Xiansheng 708B
dcheming, no I have not replaced the 6N3. Derek, yes, I have cleaned the legs with a deoxit/lube equivalent. And have ensured against the power contamination. Does it look like I should try buying a new 6N3, then? Might that lead to only one channel being affected? Thanks for your...- Stephen_Ri

Help--Crackling Xiansheng 708B
Dear Head-Fi members, I have for some time had a problem with my Xian-Sheng 708B amp: noise, along with music, is coming out of the left channel. Not a steady white noise, but erratic, loud static which is fairly constant after the amp has been on about fifteen minutes. I already bought a...- Stephen_Ri
