Drewski officially joins the "old fart" club
Yeah, but being an old fart means I can finally afford some of the better things in life!!! It also means that my hearing is quickly going, so I'll probably be happy with freebie headphones in a year or so! I'll never abandone you guys! It's just that the younger demographics of this forum...- drewski

Cartridge Recommendations
I personally like the inexpensive Grado cartridges- they provide very good value and good sound. Ask around and see if you can borrow one to see if it hums with your setup- many people have these as backup/spares. If you have the hum issue, see if you can ground the tonearm base, the spindle...- drewski

Source Upgrade -- I'm ready (up to $2500)
Congrats Joey! Wow- I'm glad you took your time and made a huge jump rather than several small ones- much cheaper in the long run! Life must be good down in So Cal since your budget doubled in the past 6 months! I'm getting really jealous because all of you are buying new toys! If you can...- drewski

Vinyl Conversion complete..(w/ bad pictures)
About time you got a decent vinyl rig It looks great and I'm sure it sounds even better! You got some great advice because the Grado Sonata is a great cartridge and Sota is a really good company as well... I had a Sota Saphire table a while back and that was a fun table- definitely didn't...- drewski

Computer Based System Tuning?
Go to www.rivesaudio.com and look under products. They have some computer programs as well as testing hardware. -
Is this RFI and what could it be doing to my sound?
OOOPS- I just read Halcyon's post and realized mine was pretty much a duplicate of what Halcyon wrote! My guess is that it was probably moreso that your air purifier was plugged into the same circuit as your 2 channel rig. Even though you have power conditioning, there's often a lot of... -
VPI SCOUT!!!
I have a VPI Scout with a Shelter 501. People have posted on AA have posted about the low compliance issues with the shelter and the JMW arms, but let me say that there is definitely no compliance or any other issues with the Shelters and the JMW arms. It's a great match and sounds great with my...- drewski

How do you guys ship large equipments if without original box?
Receivers are pretty easy- just bubble wrap and double box if you can. Be sure that the nobs aren't too tight against the walls of the box and be sure to tighten the speaker binding posts so they don't get bent. They usually make the trip. Speakers are a different story, especially if they...- drewski

Epirical Audio modded Sony DVP-S7700
I recently got the full "turbo mod" from Empirical Audio (www.empiricalaudio.com) and I have to say that if you're looking for a good transport, I'd recommend this whole heartedly. I was very skeptical at first because the stock Sony SCD-7700 as a transport was awful when paired with my...- drewski

Power Tools
Funny, I was just going to post a thread about help for power tools, but thought I'd do a search and found this thread- I don't think there's any place else like head-fi- whatever you want to know, you can find it here! I've read through the thread, but was wondering if anyone has used some...- drewski

any disadvantages of passive preamps?
Most of the complaints about passive preamps are about bass and dynamics. I had the McCormack TLC-1 which is highly rated in the passive mode. I thought it had a really sweet top end, but I couldn't get any dynamics out of it and eventually the soft sound got old. I've been told by others here...- drewski

Where to buy Arcam CD73 on the Internet?
Arcam definitely restricts internet sales and discounting as well (excluding demos). But having said that, with the present condition of most high end audio sales, most of the US distributors these days kind of look the other way. I'd recommend running a want add in Audiogon and sometimes a...- drewski

New CD Player Alert
So I couldn't resist and picked up the CEC 3300 because A.A. had a demo/return for $349 and free shipping. So judging by AA's claim that it's the best sounding sub $1000 player out there, that's what I judged it against. Some of the sub $1000 players that I'm pretty familiar with are the Arcam...- drewski

Virtual Dynamics Redux (and some cable theory)
Question 1- I still use VD cables- I still have about 8 pairs of VD power cables from power 3's up to the nites. I still think they are one of the best power cables out there. My buying these cables had nothing to do with the craze here because I had several VD cables before becoming a member of... -
Good Solid State speaker amp around 150wpc
I ended up ordering the PS Audio HCA-2. I'm really curious if I'll like it or not. I don't think I'll get it for a week or two, but I'll update when I do get it. I'll try it for a while, then maybe change the caps to blackgates if needed (supposed to make it sound even better). Gbeard, I...- drewski

Bay Area meets coming up?
Sorry gang, but I can't make it because I have to work. The poor job market of 2002 rendered me a worker bee and my boss is an idiot sometimes. She's stretching out a project that I can finish in a few weeks into a month long project. Have a great time- take lots of pics!- drewski

Good Solid State speaker amp around 150wpc
Thanks for the additional suggestions. I did have the PS Audio on my list, but forgot to mention it here. I've just heard some mixed reviews on this amp- the reviewers seem to like it, but all of the people that I know that have heard it don't like it. The technology is very interesting, and the...- drewski

Good Solid State speaker amp around 150wpc
Yidimsum- Man, is there an amp that your friend didn't have? This is an amp for my home theatre setup, so I'd rather not go tubes. I'm just being picky and just trying to get a little better performance from 2 channel playback on that system. I want it to be decent, but I don't want it to be...- drewski

Good Solid State speaker amp around 150wpc
I've actually heard the Eagle way back in the day (back in the late 80's I think). It was a good sounding amp back in the days! Thanks for the information about the DNA125. I actually owned a N.E.W. preamp, and it usually mates very, very well with S.S. amps because of it's laid back...- drewski
