OK. I'll admit it; I'm thick.

But for the life of me, I can't find the in-app purchase for MQA support. If I tap "MQA Playback" in the slide-out menu, I just get a popup dialog telling me that, "[t]his app includes MQA technology,...".

Similarly, if I go to "Settings > MQA", I just get settings for MQA ("Show MQA playback information", "Deep scan", "Scan URL without file extension".

I've looked all over the app for the option to purchase the MQA add-on but for the life of me I can't find it.

Can someone stop laughing at how stupid I am long enough to point me in the right direction?

Doesn't this mean you have already purchased it? It is what I see after I bought it. Maybe purchased on your account previously for another device?

As a side note, after a new installation of UAPP on a new device, I went into the settings for MQA and it looked like I could buy it. I exited and restarted since I already own the add-on, and the next time I looked at the MQA settings I saw what you are seeing.

Another possibility is that your DAP/DAC is a full MQA decoder in which case you do not need the in-app purchase. What DAP/DAC are you using?

I thought about that. I don't remember purchasing the MQA support. I looked in my Google Play purchase history and can find the original transaction for $10 to purchase UAPP itself but I don't see a purchase of the MQA add-on. But the app does, indeed, seem to be behaving as if I own the add-on already based on your description above.

That could be it!

I've got UAPP installed on two different devices: a Hiby R6 (this is where I see the behaviour I listed above) and a Google Pixel 3a XL. I'm planning to use the Pixel 3a with a Hiby FC3 MQA dongle (which is due to arrive in the post any day now). Wanted to purchase the MQA support for the latter device. When I tap the "MQA playback" option on the Pixel, I get a different popup telling me that "MQA PLayback requires bit-perfect audio..." which, of course, I don't have on the Pixel until the FC3 arrives.

Guess I'll just cool my jets until the FC3 arrives and try again.

If the DAC is a full MQA decoder (as opposed to a renderer) UAPP sends the unaltered stream to the DAC without the 1st unfold. The DAC then does all of the unfolding. If the DAC is non-MQA or a MQA renderer, UAPP does the 1st unfold and then sends it to the DAC. Then, if the DAC is a MQA renderer, the final unfolds are done on the DAC.
This is what I expect too. They, the producers, say it's a full mqa decoder. Yet there is no unfold.

Per the MQA spec, DACs are only supposed to show the bitrate of the source (master) that was used. There are quite a few 16 bit 44.1 kHz tracks on Tidal that are MQA encoded. I suppose they are supposed to be better than normal FLAC.

Try this track:

Even more confusing, original 352, but uapp shows 44.1 khz on usb dac.

Nope, that's totally correct. That track is a 352.8 kHz master that was encoded to 44.1 MQA. UAPP simply sends the unaltered 44.1 kHz stream to the USB DAC (if it is a full MQA decoder). The DAC does both the 1st (core) unfold and the final unfold(s).

MQA can be very confusing... :sunglasses:

Have you attempted to play an MQA file?
I think that's when the purchase option appears.

I'm very impressed with UAPP after more than 1 week of usage.
May I know what is UAPP role in MQA via Tidal?
Since I can hear an improvement in sound quality between Hifi and Master album/tracks, I'm interested to know how it works compare to DAP like R8 etc which able to 16x unfold....
