The Fiio X5 Thread

Fiio recommend FAT32 and NOT format the SDXC Micro card´s with 64 kb allocation size unit - it should be 32 kb or less. I now it´s possible to format the card directly in the X5, but I´ve used an third party software; 2Tware for it, and choosed 16 kb. Anyone have any suggestion about it?

And what are the playlist M3U -files in many of the album folders for? I use to delete them, and only save the FLAC´s, as the album cover should be tagged inside the songs. Should I leave the M3U?

When filling my Sandisk Ultra UHS-1 64 Gb with music, I´ll get a transfer speed of about 7,3 Mb/s with a USB2 SD card reader. Is there any possibilities it will get higher if using an USB3 reader instead?

When formatting you need to decide what is more important, speed or space. The larger the allocation unit size the faster access to the storage, but slightly less space. The smaller the allocation unit size the more space, but slower access speeds.

There have been many reports of issues when formatting with other software (especially with smaller allocation unit sizes) so I strongly suggest just formatting the mSD cards with the X5 itself to save a lot of headaches. When it was first released the X3 was a nightmare with formatting before Fiio included a format tool on the device. That is why the X5 comes with the (recommended) format tool as well.

At the moment no. I do like the sound of it, but I have a different one on order that on paper should be a lot better (mind you, it also costs 3 times as much). Once I have a chance to compare them I will make a final decision on what to do with them.

May even keep both, 1 for the truck (I like the LO sound when it is connected to the truck), 1 for at home & travel.

I was contemplating saying yes, in fact - for the price, I will say yes, as a source for an off-board DAC (coax out)

You might as well ask "will this be your last toy purchase"? I certainly hope not.
Do I feel an overpowering desire to try something else? Absolutely not.
Might I consider an AK 240 for any reason? Not. Not twice. Not three times.

For now, yes.

The thing is though, same as with headphones. What i thought was the absolute best half a year ago is now no longer the absolute best, and i upgrade my gear over and over.

There is no endgame setup. It's just an illusion

Thanks for the replies guys; I was curious as I am now wondering whether the X5 can drive more headphones than the X3 (and therefore, I can focus on headphones/customs after getting it).

And @aangen, real sorry about this (since you told me to just get the X3); that delay in my paycheck is causing me to rethink the "X3 or X5" debate yet again :frowning2:

  Hi
Thanks for the reply. Is there something I can do to the files prior to uploading to the X5. Presume I will need to adjust the volume of the actual file if the X5 can't handle any adjustment info in the file tags. Seems a bit poor for such a high level player.

Since I typically listen to an album at a time I really haven't looked in to what volume levelling software to use, or if it even exists. I'd be interested to know if others have a solution though.

The workaround I have for now is to use foobar2000 to reconvert your files with the ReplayGain processing feature. This will forcibly rewrite your audio files so that they will be at approx 89dB in any DAP though so make sure to have a backup just in case.

I just thought of one particular thing while using the X5 as DAC on USB:

How does it handle charging while used as DAC? I can imagine that the permanent charging and uncharging does not benefit the life expectancy of the battery.

I guess the .pls will be added to the folder when making a playlist, am I right?

So if deleting it, maybe the X5 gonna add a new .pls if make a playlist in it (with fw 2.0xb)!?

I'm pretty sure the X5 uses M3U files for playlist and not .pls, so delete away!

You might get some better feedback on beta software here (FW 2.04/2.05 beta thread) and here (FW 2.06/2.07 beta thread)

For those that've used the X5 as a digital source (coax out) for a while, what sort of battery life are you getting?

...My first time of draining the battery at the moment, am on 6-7hrs, and still showing full battery??

FW2.07b if it makes a difference :)

when using the x5 as DAC, the battery will be charged till it is full. and X5 will be powered by the USB power.

at this point, it is good for the battery cause it is keep at full level.

Thanks for the answer James, but does this affect the life expectancy as the battery will be charged fully as DAC, then a days use with 4 hours playback (so down to maybe 50%) and then back as DAC in the afternoon?

Should I get the x5 online? I am scared of it breaking but its more cheaper

The first month, it was only selled in China/ Asia. A bought mine May -14 from ebay and was shipped from Singapore. It took just about one week to arrive to me in Sweden in Europe. Asked for shipping with tracking number, for safer shipping. It was sent in a Jiffy bag (bubble pouch envelope) and it seems like it have had some heavy pressure on it, but everytning works fine. Was fw 2.0 from manufacturer. I payed 332 USD incl. shipping when making an offer. Really happy with the player!
