This summer, I waited for Amazon's price on the HD 650 to bottom out. I waited a day too long: They went right back to full MAP. It's a moving target.

I hear you!  There is no way to predict this.  
 
The only thing you can do is to firmly establish a price you're willing to pay, then wait for it.  
 
If you miss it or it doesn't happen at all, oh well.  Patience will win the day, eventually.
 
That's better than acting impulsively on a series of five or ten dollar deductions.

If you were already looking to buy it, $40 is loose change compared to the $1k price tag (and the risk of the price jumping back up). A bit like watching USD exchange rates, if you ask me..
