There's plenty of reasons for the hype:
 

1. Good power output
2. Wolfson DACs
3. Milled aluminum case
4. Ability to connect optical cables and digital coax cables from your source device
5. Tone (Bass / Treble) controls
6. Sleep Timer ... and even more options.

The e17 it certainly not an overhyped product. It delivers. In a moment of weakness, I sold mine to ^^^^, then bought another this weekend. Now I'm happy again
