The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

  Hello,

I'm a new happy owner of a DT880 600 ohm, can you suggest me the most rated amps under 500$ please? Musical genres: 60% prog/hard rock - 40% jazz/classical

Chain: Foobar/Hi Face two -> Rega Dac

The amp should also run with Alessandro Ms1i and Shure srh940, but basically I need something dedicated to DT880.. just after a couple of days I realized will be my main gear :)

Thanks

Tubes, baby, tubes!

You want to become a "Made Man?"
"A Friend of Ours"?
Do you swear it?
Certainly!
Who is the Saint's picture I have to drop blood on?
Hertsens... Mercer... Guttenberg...

Well I will just have to obtain some Stax first. :)

Would the difference between the HE-4 and the DT880s be very noticeable? I like my DT880s and I am going to keep them because they are so good. But the "grass is greener on the other side" syndrome is effecting my thoughts right now...bigger, better, more expensive, more impressive.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that means you will be gone from LD thread as well that's not good.

Don't worry it would be quite a while before I see any Stax gear...

The DT880s hold a special place in my heart... they were my initial gateway drug into the Beyerdynamic House Sound, They're going to be keepers for sure*!

I've owned all 3 of the headphones you own. The good news is that neither the 940 or MS1 actually need further amping. Their low impedance and high sensitivity mean that amping is not really going to add anything (no real benefit). The problem is going to be that if you want an amp to suit all of them - the 600ohm DT880 needs higher voltage - which leads many to prefer an OTL tube amp. However most OTL tube amps also have a high impedance on the headphone-out, which make them impractical for lower impedance headphones (incorrect damping factor).

For your purposes - I'd suggest either looking into a hybrid tube set-up, or just a good solid state. One I can recommend (it's a combined DAC and amp) is the NFB 15.32 or 11.32 from Audio-gd.

I think first you have to decide if you definitely need it to run both low & high impedance headphones.  If you decide you only need it for the DT880, you can select something specifically tailored for high impedance.  If you go that way and are at all DIY inclined, you could take a look at the Bottlehead Crack.

If you want something that works well with both low & high impedance headphones, you may be want to look something with a low/high Z switch or low/high Z headphone jacks.  Have you read about the Torpedo?  You can either build it yourself from a kit or buy an assembled version direct from Beezar.

Both of those amps are under $500.

Yes I did, maybe I'll keep posting so you can still see my Avatar and I'll continue promoting DT880 + tubes!
.......keep reading.....

.....I bought an entry level Stax system, the SRS-2170.....

......yes, my bad, I sold the DTs.
But they didn't get too much head time after I tasted the Stax.

I've been wondering recently if I should've just went straight to Stax and skipped all these dynamic 'phones.  But where would the fun be in that.... :)

I plan on getting a dt880. I need help to try and find an amp/dac that will work the best with it. My budget is 120$ (im cheap).

(will audioquest dragonfly work well with it? probably not right?)

Aune T1 if you can find it for that low.

Owning the Beyer DT880 for over two years does give me a reference point!

I'll never sell all of all my dynamic headphones, I have small open backed ones for work, small closed back ones for travelling, IEMs for the gym, and I still like my AKG Q701s, etc.
