I'm late to this discussion, but have 1981 & 2019 600Ω'ers and can save most of you the trouble of auditioning pads: if you like the 880 sound for the reasons you bought it, the ONLY pad that will do it justice is replacement mfgr velour pads (actually the '81's OEM's are pleather, which must also be specified in replacement).
This is my first "post" on this thread, so don't know if it will show up as a reply to the last comment or not.
I googled ' mfgr velour pads dt 800' and I can't find anything specific, could you show me what you mean? Link?

Actually, Elegiac, if you indeed have the ancient 880s, the proper pad is the ED 550 S (pleather), which I don't believe they still make. I made do with this one - it's really, really close to original https://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/p/edt-770-s
I have a modern one, what do you think that would do to the sound?

They don't seem much plusher than the stock pads anyway. I think for my problem a plusher pad is necessary... but I like the stock tuning. My fix at the moment is to wear them further back on my head to avoid more of the pressure-point-earpad-interaction behind/under my ear around the jawline.

Oh my. I think my t1 met its match. At less than 160usd, I can't believe what the dt880 is able to do. Paired with my yamaha ca1000s, they're just magical.

Bought my 1st 600Ω 880 in '81, but fell for the T1 (gotta be better, right?) when it came out. Gave it a chance to "break in", but unloaded it within 6 mos. WAAY overpriced at release, to boot. Bad planning.

Just different; not better, or worse. Horses for courses? I use 880 for rock, T1 for acoustic/classical. Mix & match music, headphones & amps.

Thanks for unloading your T1s. This releases them for us to refurb/mod/tinker. I wouldn't part with my various FrankenT1s, or 880s.

Still loving my DT-880 600omh :) They get the job done, I tend to use them more frequently than the DT-900 Pro X (especially now that DT-900 Pro X had a crack forming near the mini XLR jack on the headphones, haven't even opened the replacements they sent as I am nervous about them getting damaged again for no reason - I babied those things, it's some kind of design flaw or materials issue).
