Any idea how to tell if the EX1000 is the US or Japanese version? (without the box or manual). Perhaps from the earpiece, cable or tips?

the Japanese version comes with EX1000 cable. Mine's US version I bought 8 years ago and comes with EX600 cables.

Sorry for the ignorance but what's the difference between the EX1000 and EX600 cable? I tried Googling the images of both.

The ex1000 cable is better, and can be reterminate to balanced, up to now no one can confirmed is the ex600 cables can be e reterminated unless you willing to be a lab rat and cut it open.

I think only the Japan models come with the special cable. But it “can be” swapped if package has been opened by user or seller.

I had to buy the EX1000 cables separate. It was better and fuller sound for me.

This is not true, there is no special cable, the RK EX1000 is the default cable for the Japanese market, as well for Hong Kong and a few other market.

After being on the fence for a while and looking at the pricing of the latest Sony trio of IEMs, I decided to order a set of EX1000s from Japan whilst I still can I've also ordered a balanced cable from the same seller @Signal2Noise mentioned earlier. I look forward to see how it sounds when it arrives, in the mean time I'll continue to peruse this thread
